Shannon Hegarty(born 14 June 1979) is an Australian former professionalrugby leaguefootballer who played in the 2000s. An Australia international and Queensland State of Origin representativethree-quarter back,he played club football in theNational Rugby Leaguefor theSydney Roosters(with whom he won the2002 NRL Premiership),South Sydney RabbitohsandNorth Queensland Cowboys.

Playing career

Originally fromBrisbane, Queensland,Hegarty played for theSydney Roostersat centre in their2000 NRL Grand Finalloss to theBrisbane Broncos.

Hegarty scored the Roosters' firsttryin their win over the Warriors in the2002 NRL grand finaland went on to victory in England for the resulting2003 World Club Challenge.He was then selected to play on the wing for Queensland in every match of the2003 State of Origin series.Hegarty scored a try whilst playing in the centres for the Roosters in their loss to Penrith in the2003 NRL grand final.After that he was selected to go on the2003 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France,helping Australia to victory overGreat Britainin what would be the last time the two nations contested anAshes series.

Hegarty played for the Roosters on the wing in their2004 NRL Grand finalloss to cross-Sydney rivals,Canterbury-Bankstown.In 2005, Hegarty joined theSydney Roostersarch rivalsSouth Sydney.In his first season at Souths the club finished 13th on the table.

In the2006 NRL season,Hegarty made 10 appearances as the club finished last on the table. In the2007 NRL season,Hegarty was part of the Souths team which reached the finals for the first time since 1989.[2][3]

Released from the final year of his playing contract withSouth Sydneyon a mutual agreement, Hegarty signed with theNorth Queensland Cowboystwo days later.[4]

Post playing

Off the field, Hegarty posed for theGods Of Footballcharity calendar in 2009 and appeared as Benji Veniamin inTough Nuts: Australia's Hardest Criminalsin 2011.[5]

He was a trainer and conditioning coach for theJacksonville Axemenof theUSA Rugby League.[6][7]He currently owns and operates Down Under Fitness gym & personal training in Jacksonville Beach, FL.[8]
