She's electrifying in the sequence when she breaks down after getting to know the true intentions of her lover."[34]For her performance, Kapoor received theStardust Searchlight Award for Best Actress.[35]Kapoor was subsequently offered the lead female role inAurangzeb(2013) as a part of her deal with Yash Raj Films. However, she signed on toVishesh Films'Aashiqui 2(2013) instead, thereby cancelling the three-film contract with Yash Raj Films.[31]

In 2013, Kapoor found her breakthrough role inMohit Suri's romantic musicalAashiqui 2,the sequel to the 1990 filmAashiqui. She was cast as Aarohi Keshav Shirke, a small-town bar singer who becomes a successful playback artist with the help of a popular male singer (played byAditya Roy Kapur). The film was a box office success with a global revenue of1.09 billion(US$13 million).[36][37]Film criticAnupama Chopracalled Kapoor a "real triumph" and added that her "porcelain face has a haunting vulnerability".[38]However, Vinayak Chakravorty ofIndia Todaywrote that she "looks pretty though fails to add spark".[39]Kapoor received several nominations in the Best Actress category, including her first at theFilmfare Awards.[40]The same year, she also appeared in a guest appearance for the romantic comedyGori Tere Pyaar Mein, playing the fiancée ofImran Khan's character.[41]

Kapoor began 2016 by featuring as starTiger Shroff's love interest in the action filmBaaghi, about a pair of rebellious lovers set against the backdrop of a martial arts school.[53]The role required her to practiceKalaripayattu(amartial artoriginating in the south of India).[54]Shubhra Gupta ofThe Indian Expressconsidered her character in it to be dated, but thought that she played the romantic and action sequences "well enough".[55]Commercially, the film performed well and collected a total of1.26 billion(US$15 million).[56][57]Kapoor's final release in 2016 was therock musicaldramaRock On 2,a sequel to 2008'sRock On!!.She was cast alongsideFarhan Akhtar,Arjun RampalandPrachi Desai. She played the role of Jiah Sharma, an introverted singer and keyboard player, who suffers a neglectful relationship with her father.[58]To prepare, she spent time reading books in isolation[59]and undertook vocal training under the singerSamantha Edwards.[60]Namrata JoshiofThe Hindudisliked the film and considered Kapoor's performance "self-consciously meek and submissive".[61]Rock On 2did not recoup its450 million(US$5.2 million) investment, thus emerging as a commercial failure at the box office.[62]

In 2017, Kapoor starred inShaad Ali's romantic dramaOk Jaanu,in her second collaboration with Aditya Roy Kapur.[63]A remake ofMani Ratnam's Tamil romantic dramaO Kadhal Kanmani(2015), the film was produced byKaran Joharunder the banner ofDharma Productions. It received mixed reviews from critics and Kapoor's performance was generally noted as inferior toNithya Menen's.[64][65]Kapoor next appeared in the romanceHalf Girlfriend,in which she was paired oppositeArjun Kapoor. It was based onChetan Bhagat'snovel of the same name, and reunited her with director Mohit Suri. In a review of the latter film, Raja Sen ofNDTVconsidered it to be a "preposterously dimwitted romance" and criticised Kapoor as "shrill and insubstantial".[66]Later in 2017, Kapoor appeared inApoorva Lakhia'sHaseena Parkar,a biopic of terroristDawood Ibrahim's sister, who ran a crime ring of her own. Kapoor played the titular role, alongside her brotherSiddhanth Kapoor, who essayed Ibrahim's character.[67]The film was panned by critics upon release;[68]Anna M. M. VetticadofFirstpostconsidered Kapoor's performance to be as "bland as the screenplay", adding "she tries to appear mature and menacing, but the effort shows too much".[69]None of her 2017 releases performed well at the box office.[70][71]

Further commercial success (2018–present)

Kapoor next starred oppositeRajkummar Raoin the comedy horrorStree(2018).[72]Based on the legend ofNale Ba,the film featured her as a mysterious, unnamed woman who falls in love with Rao's character.[73]The critic Saibal Chatterjee took note of the film'sfeministsubtext and found Kapoor to be "suitably icy as the Enigma tic woman".[74]Rajeev Masandopined that she "blends in nicely as the alluring out-of-towner with an air of mystery around her".[75] With gross earnings of over1.7 billion(US$20 million),Streeemerged as her highest-grossing release to that point.[76][77]In the same year, Kapoor reteamed with Shahid Kapoor inBatti Gul Meter Chalu, asocial problem filmabout electricity issues in rural India. She agreed to the project due to the social message she found in the script.[78]Filming was marred with dispute when the studioKriArj Entertainmentfailed to remunerate the crew. Following a brief hiatus, production resumed afterBhushan Kumartook over the project.[79]Writing forIndia Today,Charu Thakur noted that Kapoor "needs to go a long way as far as her acting skills are concerned".[80]

Kapoor in 2018

Kapoor began the new decade by reuniting with Dhawan in the dance filmStreet Dancer 3D(2020), which Namrata Joshi termed a "compilation of indistinguishable performances".[93]It flopped at the box office.[94]She then reteamed with Shroff in thespiritual sequelBaaghi 3.[95]The film was panned by critics and underperformed commercially as theatres were shut due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[96][97][98]WION's Shomini Sen called the film "an assault to the brain" and criticised the stereotypical portrayal of Kapoor's character being a "liberated woman" that has to be "foul-mouthed, aggressive and glamorous".[99]

After a three-year hiatus, which she described as "unforeseen and forced" due to the pandemic, Kapoor starred alongsideRanbir KapoorinLuv Ranjan's romantic comedyTu Jhoothi Main Makkaar(2023).[100]Hindustan Times'Monika Rawal Kukreja praised her styling and look, adding that she "delivers a very controlled performance though she goes a bit overboard in the emotionally charged scenes".[101]It emerged as a moderate commercial success.[102][103]In 2024, Kapoor reprised her role in the sequelStree 2,as part of theMaddock Horror Comedy Universe.[104]Writing forHindustan Times,Rishabh Suri was appreciative of Kapoor's performance but felt that she had been overshadowed by others in the ensemble due to her limited screen time,[105]while Tushar Joshi ofIndia Todayopined that she brought "the right blend of mystery and intrigue".[106]Stree 2emerged as thehighest-grossing Hindi film of 2024as well as theseventh highest-grossing Hindi filmof all time, with a worldwide gross of over8.75 billion(US$100 million).[107][108]
