Atéléroman( "telenovel" or ''annual drama series'') is a genre ofFrench-languagedramatelevision seriesinCanada,similar to asoap operaor aSpanish languagetelenovela.InFrance,thetéléromangenre is known asfeuilleton télévisé(similar to aserial).Téléromansare one of the most popular television series formats in Québécoisculture[1]and are also shown on French television.

In Canada, all of the majorfrancophonetelevision networks airtéléromans,including the public broadcasterRadio-Canada,which broadcasts them nationally, and the private networksTVAandNoovo.TFOinOntariohas also produced one téléroman.

In France, theTF1network and the subscription channelCanal+airfeuilletons télévisés.Some famous téléromans produced in France includeRiviera,Sous le soleil,Plus belle la vieandCinq sœurs.

One of the first téléromans on Canadian television wasLa famille Plouffe.Thistéléromanproved highly successful, and has helped the genre become a staple onCanadian Frenchtelevision. English Canadian networks have also adapted a number of Québec téléromans for English viewers, includingLa famille Plouffe,Lance et CompteandLes Hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin,with varying degrees of success.
