Seven Towns

edit

I grew up along the Severn Valley, and I recall the Telford area being known as the "seven towns" due to its origins of 7 smaller, older towns. I was talking to a couple of friends the other day who also recalled this, but none of us could name all seven towns. Wellington, Madley, Dawley... but what are the other four? The modern district encompasses more than seven towns and villages, so what were the original seven towns?Andrew Oakley(talk)09:22, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would assume Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley, Madeley, Stirchley, probably Telford (the bit where the town centre is) and possibly Ironbridge? The first four are obvious but the last three could be anything really. Donnington, Hadley, Ketley and Trench are other contenders. Anyway, I would probably just say there were only four (or five if you include Telford Town Centre)Asdfasdf1231234(talk)21:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

accent section

should probably be deleted, as its a tad shite.

Indeed. It has been removed and nobody has opposed the move.84.64.103.6400:22, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Further expansion?

edit

I'm really stuck on how to further expand this article. I've added some new sections, maps and images, but I don't think the town really has as much as history as most. Any suggestions?Asdfasdf123123421:01, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Accessible Maps

edit

Please can contributors try to make maps and diagrams accessible to those with colour vision problems ( "colour blindness" ). For instance, by using labels or patterns in addition to colours. This affects 1 in 12 white British males.Andrew Oakley

I've replaced the image with a clickable link map. Apologies for the delay.Asdfasdf1231234(talk)16:29, 18 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Beatties image - remove?

edit

Beatties has been bought by House of Fraser - could the image be either changed or deleted?77.198.170.218(talk)19:20, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Unless anyone can get one with a suitably acceptable composition I really don't see the point; the only visible change to the building exterior is the main black sign. A simple note under the image should be sufficient. It's hardly easy to get 'good' pictures of such a visually unappealing town.84.66.212.99(talk)21:06, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not sure what someone is trying to prove by vandalising this page using multiple accounts, what are you trying to do?

Rhoticity

edit

I've changed the pronunciation of the town's name to a non-rhotic version. This agrees with the linked sound file, which isRPor similar. Whether locals typically use the r-colouring I don't know;Rhotic_accent#Distributionsuggests it's on the border of a rhotic area - maybe someone can help?Neurotip(talk)20:54, 30 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Inland Revenue had (has?) one of it's main computer centres in or near Telford. This could be worth mentioning.Starfiend(talk)20:35, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Telford & Wrekin Time-Travelling Hockey Club

edit

Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club (grass, not ice)http:// telfordhockeyclub.co.uk/claims to be "Established in 1895... one of the oldest hockey clubs in the UK". If true, this is notable and deserves an entry in the Sport section which I am happy to write, but I am concerned that the hockey club appears to be nearly 75 years older than the town. Certainly it can't possibly have been named anything to do with "Telford" in 1895. The club's website does not explain this, can anyone provide pointers to useful sources please? I'm anticipating that it grew out of one of the seven towns, but need references. Thanks.Andrew Oakley(talk)14:39, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Urban Area Merge proposal

edit

I propose merging theTelford urban areaarticle into this one. There is very little in there that can't be covered in here. The only real difference between Telford as covered in this article and the urban area is that the latter includes Broseley.Eopsid(talk)17:08, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Or could I suggest making a new tab with the information in the article and a mention of it in Broseley article. And Broseley is hardly a minor thing given it has the first Punjabi mayor in Shropshire ever.RailwayJG(talk)21:24, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thats what a merger probably would entail, all the info would be in this article I'll probably put in the Suburbs section, feel free to add an urban area mention to the existing Broseley article.Eopsid(talk)23:25, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thomas Telford School

edit

From reading the Education sub-section of this page, I believe that the first paragraph is unnecessarily biased towards the Thomas Telford School. It reads like a list of achievements for the school and more of an advertisement than an encyclopedic entry. This level of attention is not enjoyed by any of the other towns schools within this article and I believe it reduces the neutrality of the page overall. I also note that on the Wikipedia page forThomas Telford Schoolan 'Advert' template has been added in December 2020. Can we reach some form of consensus concerning the schools entry on the main page for Telford to improve the overall neutrality and quality of this article?--Domersr(talk)10:53, 4 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

AgreedDomersrthe majority of the puff should be removed. The link to the school article suffices for those who want to know more. I will look at the school article to remove anyWP:BOOSTER.SovalValtos(talk)12:19, 4 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Battle of Cinderloo

edit

I see it mentions the 'battle' as being a protest against the cutting of wages in the coal industry. However it was ironmasters who instigated the wage cuts - were not workers in the iron industry also affected?Cloptonson(talk)06:50, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Telford built-up area

edit

Telford urban arearedirects to Demography but surely it deserves more coverage than just that aspect alone? (physical extent, for example). Would someone like to do the needful? The source data is atUK Census(2011)."Local Area Report – Telford BUA (E34004622)".Nomis.Office for National Statistics.(The "NOMIS2021" data will be along soon but not available yet.) There is a map at that source.𝕁𝕄𝔽(talk)12:24, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Noting the merge discussion and decision above, at the very least there should be an explicitly named section for the BUA. --𝕁𝕄𝔽(talk)12:30, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Distances: inconsistent

edit

I don't know what source has been used for distances, but the figures in lead and Geography section disagree. Telford is 15 or 16 miles from Shrewsbury, 19 or 20 from Wolverhampton. (I may have remembered those details wrong: editing on phone so can't easily check, but there is inconsistency of some sort).PamD04:50, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
