editAll the references given here to support a birth year of 1952 are unreliable.
1. IMDB actually supports 1949. 2. Bildblog supports 1949 in spite of a solicitors letter asking them in future to use 1952. 3. 60th Birthday 2012... because the artist says so? 4. Archived.... anything can be written there. 5. Wayback Machine.... anything can be written by anyone. 6. The artists official website will naturally support the date the artist wishes to convey.— Precedingunsignedcomment added byKoufi(talk•contribs)21:27, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
Eurovision
editDid that gal really take part in the1967 Eurovision Song Contestat the age of 15? Could she have been born some timebefore1952?--KF17:53 7 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- Well, she could have, butthis page(no longer available at its original location, but still in Google's cache) thinks she was born in '52, and I can't find anything that disagrees with that. --Camembert
- It's certainly possible. The current rules require contestants to be at least 16, I think, but the German girl who won in the early 1980s was only 13. --Arwel08:42 9 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- The German girl you refer to is, I assume, Nicole? She was 17, not 13 when she won the ESC in 1982.Katie1971(Let's talk!!)14:50, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Sandra Kim was the girl who won at 13 years of age in 1986. Anyway then you could sing that young later not.—Precedingunsignedcomment added by213.137.8.127(talk)00:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
In the film about Vicky Leandros produced by Francois Reichenbach in 1973 which can be seen on you tube Vicky herself says that she was 17 when she sang at ESC 1967. This was also stated in the transmission of the show. She was born in 1949. She began with the years to falsify the date to make herself younger gradually moving it thru 1950 then 1951 and finally 1952. Before computers you could say what you wanted and get away with it. Now people can communicate and say all the evidence to the contrary and you get found out. 1949 is stated on many of her LPs too - always was that date. She appeared with her school class - a class of 15 and 16 year old pupils in 1965 on one of her first tv appearances. Now we are asked to believe she was 12. Just ridiculous.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by87.254.93.166(talk)01:27, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Earlier it was permitted for very young artists under 16 to enter - then later it was raised. It would have been possible in 1967 for Vicky to sing at age 14 years. However she was NOT 14 but 17 as was announced when she sang in the TV coverage of the ESC. Vicky was born in 1949 and not 1952 as is now said. I also attended a live performance in Greece in 1968 ( before her birthday )when she was introduced as being 18. Therefore 19 on 230868. Numerous record sleeves also give this date. Vicky states this age also herself on a video in 1966. There is FAR more evidence for 1949 than for ANY other year of birth. Lots more examples than I have stated.
That would mean she was 19 when she won it, which is certainly possible from my recollection of her. It used to be very common for children to participate. I think Gigliola Cinquetti was 13 or 14 when she won in the 1960s, and I remember a boy of about 12 being a contestant.Deb22:04 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)...... You are wrong Gigliola was actually 16 when she won the contest and Vicky was 22 when she won.
- I verified her date of birth at least twice. I think the 16-year rule is recent, because shortly before it had become for some countries a habit to nominate very young participants.kostasge20:53 18 Jul 2003 (UTC) (.... and how did you verify it I wonder?)
It is possible. There are other sources that say that Vicky was born in 1949 or 1950. But actually the right date must be 1952. If you see her videos and photos of that period plus her appearances she could not be older. She is almost a child.
Well she looks like a normal 17 year old might look to me in 1967 at ESC.. we were not all astounded saying.. "oh look how young she is she must be 14 not 17".
Why say could Vicky have been 15 when she took part in the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest?.The question is could she have been 14 years old not 15.Vicky's birthday is 23 August and the contest as we all know is always far earlier in the year than this. The date in question for 1967 was 08th April. If the 1952 year of birth is correct for Vicky then she clearly would have been 14 years old not being 15 until some 4.5 months later. Atleast get the question right even if you do not know the answer!!! There is ALOT of evidence to suggest that Vicky was born long before 1952 and very little to suggest otherwise except for artist/record company propaganda and all nature of PR which seeks to promote her as being younger. No doubt we would all like to knock a few years off our age particularly an ageing glamourous singer but it does not mean it is the truth.Since I have been a fan her year of birth has been quoted over the years as 1948 1949 1950 1951 and now 1952. Obviously as all the quotes come from official sources alot of lies have been told so that nobody including the most knowlegeable fans knows what to believe. However by far the most probable always was and remains 1949.Vicky's age at ESC '67 was given as 17 and for many years ALL official material agreed with that.I see no reason to disbelieve this without firm proof and not speculation. We all thought she was 17 at the time and didn't expect we were being lied to. We didn't all say - look how young she is - she can't be 17. You either believe the tale that as a youngster she was made to be 3 years older or as a more mature star she was made to be 3 years younger.I don't say Vicky was NOT born in 1952 - I just say that there IS alot of evidence to suggest otherwise in fact it's overwhelming. It would just be so straight forward if the truth had always been told. I have official material from Vicky's record companies at various times and record sleeves/press releases which state EVERY year from 1948 thru to 1952 as her date of birth. How foolish does this look?
- Hi! My girlfriend's father was a friend of Vicky during late 60ies in Athens and they have many photos together. She was a year older than him and he is born in 1953. If you see also her pictures and videos she can't be really older. In the 1967 Eurovision she is almost a child. U can tell from her voice also.
No reason not to believe you but again without proof it is still hearsay. Good discussion though.
I agree! The only way is someone to see her ID or passport..haha! In any case even if I am not a great fan I think she looks good and has a great voice for her age!Don't you all agree?
It may not even suffice if one were to somehow see an ID! If you google Vicky Leandros Astrology (Astro Data Bank Wiki) you will find there info concerning the horoscope and astrological chart of Vicky Leandros. It is written in German. This info is assembled for the Astro Data Bank by personal interview but information from other sources was also taken. The year 1952 was given as the year of birth by Miss Leandros however her father Leo Leandros when asked by one of the journalist reporters stated her year of birth as 1949! Furthermore it states there that her birth year has been altered at the Corfu registry from 1949 to 1952. If this is correct then an ID would still not tell the truth and perhaps this is why there is talk of a personal ID stating 1952 which Miss Leandros has been able to produce.
Her first album Songs and Folklore released in October 1966 states on the cover that she is 17 years old - the same age she still was 6 months later in April 1967 when singing at ESC in Vienna. The transmission of the contest also states that she is 17 in her introduction before singing. Many other albums also include on the sleeve her birth year date 1949.
Does anyone know what was the story of Vicky's reported health scare in late 70ies? Also why were her records forbidden in former East Germany because of "Theo" in the 70ies?-
... Reported as a serious vocal chord problem caused by over practising for a concert after a lay off period. However she was also pregnant which was hidden for awhile. So it's hard to know what to believe. I still have the Bild Newspaper with the first announcement of this and headline "Vicky - Blood in Throat" from 24/09/79. Various articles followed suggesting she may never sing again or if she had to pause too long she would never regain her former status. Anyway that's a little about the health scare I mentioned in the biography article. This also all happened at a time when Vicky was not getting big hits in the disco boom and CBS did not release her new album. Vicky was also unhappy at CBS. A pause and a regrouping were therefore on the cards obviously for a number of reasons. As far as Theo and the former DDR goes - firstly Vicky was very popular in the former East Germany and there are many pressings from there. She also appeared there. I was not aware that there was a particular problem with "Theo" however it was a song originally associated with war - a soldiers marching song called "ROSA WIR FAHRN NACH LODZ". If there was a problem could it have been because the song had an association which was considered a sensitive area? I do not think that Vicky records were banned ever there. Items of a more western culture and luxuries were often "black market" or smaller issue numbers and sold only in certain small retail outlets - tourist shops etc. I am British so maybe somebody German could educate us all more on this topic. Hope that helped.
Thank you! That helped. It was the same story I had heard from someone from Greece, word of mouth though.I don't know if that was true but her voice in the 80ies was really good.

editI've had a big sort out of the page and removed as much bias as I can find to get it in shape, but does anyone know anything about her albums? The discography section is a mess with multiple albums of the same name. It needs simplifying down to one list of genuine (and official) albums. Variations in various countries are not needed - just the albums as originally released. --Tuzapicabit(talk)21:45, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sorted! Going on 3 websites dedicated to her, I've managed to trawl through the countless albums into what was genuine and what is either variation or cheap/unofficial compilation.--Tuzapicabit(talk)18:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
The 1970s
editWe are told in this section that the Bronze Rose of Montreux is or was "world famous". What is the basis for that claim? I never heard of the Rose, yet I was around when these broadcasts were made.
We are told, further, that Leandros's television programme employed "surprising, even shocking, imagery". Again, we have no citation to back up this emphatic claim. Who was ever truly shocked by the décor of a middle of the road, light entertainment television programme?
Is this article guilty of hyperbole and exaggeration?
97.124.210.210(talk)18:07, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Firstly you must be really thick if you have not heard of the Montreux Film awards of Golden Rose Silver Rose and Bronze Rose. Certainly you are not brainy enough to assume that since you have not heard of it then it is not famous!!!
Secondly I would back what has been said about the ICH BIN show and that was the reaction to it at the time. The writer says surprising even shocking which it certainly was when watching in 1970 and even today. The point is that people were expecting the light entertainment MOR that you suggest but that is not what they got. Have you even seen it and do you understand the meaning behind it. I doubt it from what you say.—Precedingunsignedcomment added by213.137.30.91(talk)15:55, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
- I remember the era from when we were in Germany where my husband also accompanied her in a live TV show on bouzouki and banjo. I remember the CBS debacle. The then CBS Boss was quoted (maybe in Stern) that 'CBS has a branch in Germany to sell US artists in Germany, not sell German artists to the US'.144.136.192.70(talk)05:08, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
Fan written article
editThis entry on Vicky Leandros is not up to par to Wiki Standards. It appears written by a fan and exaggerates her success, particularly after 1978. Wikipedia must revise the article and remove non verified information, in particular I suggest anything related to her career after 1978 to be verified or removed.— Precedingunsignedcomment added byNayumadehrafti(talk•contribs)05:32, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
Can't see anything wrong with the article - unless it has already been revised and was worse before. It is factual and does not exaggerate her success after 1978 or before and does not venture into personal opinion or speculation or over praise her in my opinion - if anything I think it is very modest and doesn't make enough of her success. Some of her successes and hits etc are mentioned but far from all.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by87.254.67.168(talk)15:32, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
It could all do with re writing imo as not enough detail is given about her career - what is said is brief and pretty much to the point though. I know a lot about her and don't take against any of it - what is said is correct. I think it is written by someone knowledgable about Vicky - those people are yes often fans but I think it still sticks to facts which are true and the writing is also reasonably up to wiki standards to my view.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by87.254.67.168(talk)15:50, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
Birth date (August 2014)
editThe Greek Government Ministry website which stores basic details of all Greek citizens and which is available for all to reference states that Vassiliki von Ruffin ( alias Vicky Leandros) of Leandros and Kyriaki ( her parents ) was born in 1949. So let that finally be an end to all other versions.
Regarding the year of birth of Vicky Leandros: I have many items of memorabilia in my collection which show that 1952 cannot be the correct date as is said these days by so many people. One such item is a dated press photo of Vicky from April 1968 which talks of her love of driving sports cars and which states that she passed her driving test and has had her own driving license now for six weeks. In Germany you have to be 18 years old to do that and to drive unaccompanied on the highway. It is just another reason to prove the date must be 1949 or earlier. Also I have in my possession a list of pupils in her class what we would call a class register from 1961/2. Her name is listed among the others in her class which is a class year of 12 year olds. I have many more items also but these two examples are pretty defining I would say. I know people reading this cannot see them but I have these items and have no reason to make a false statement.
I can also prove that her record company publicity regularly lied about her year of birth as anyone with items of memorabilia can also testify. For example her LP Star Magazin from 1981 states she was born in 1950! Whilst the same year from the same recording company the publicity for her new album Ich Gehe Neue Wege states that she was born in 1951! For the Vicky album release in 1983 she was described as being 31 years old implying 1952 as the year of birth though not actually stated in the press promo booklet. The album was released in October.
Then publicity for her 1985 album Eine Nacht in Griechenland states 1952 as the year of birth. This was the first time I remember seeing this year of birth actually written in black and white rather than just a wrong age (younger by three years ) being written. Many earlier albums world wide when a year of birth was given it was always 1949 from the beginning of her career and for many years subsequently until it mysteriously started to creep ever forward to 1950 then 1951 through to 1952.
Any long time fan with a huge collection of records and memorabilia such as dated press photos and promo press booklets for the relevant albums will be able to agree with what I say. The date of birth given out (no doubt in collusion with the artist ) was ever changing.

Message copied fromWikipedia:Requests for undeletion#Vicky Leandros.
Hi! Sorry my english is not very good;-)... Vicky Leandros is born 1952! In the letter which I have specified as the source can also be seen! In IMDb even the correct year (1952) is specified. The website "vickyleandros" is shut down. The website "vickyleandros.gr" no longer exists. Can these two not be deleted at Wikipedia? This is confusing.
ALL the references given under number 1 in support of a birth date of 1952 are unreliable. The first item re Bild newspaper actually supports 1949!!! as does IMDb!!! and the Wayback machine is not an effective source as anything can be written there.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by217.28.14.9(talk)20:56, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
Actually just noticed that the IMDb site also states 1949 as the birth year of Vicky Leandros!!! Yet it is given here as a reference to support 1952!!!— Precedingunsignedcomment added by87.254.93.166(talk)01:16, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Bild newspaper does not agree with the 1952 birth date claim and in response to a solicitors letter sent to them on Miss Leandros' instructions complaining about news articles describing her as being 64 instead of 61 as she claims to be, they published a reply under the title of "Vicky Leandros does not want to be 64 anymore". In this article they point out numerous discrepancies over the years to support the fact that she is older. I could have helped them with many more examples and already knew all the info they quoted.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by92.39.197.134(talk)15:40, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
History supports 1949 with 1948 a possibility. How was she 17 at ESC 1967 which was stated on TV at the time? How did she have her own drivers license on the public road in March 1968? Why does she say herself she is 16 in early 1966 when singing her new single "Wenn Du Geh'n Willst"? Why is she listed in a class of 12 year old pupils in the school year 1961/2? Whatever letter and source you have cannot explain away these things can it? What explanation do you have?.......— Precedingunsignedcomment added by92.39.197.134(talk)15:24, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Furthermore in an interview with Nikos Mastorakis in 1972 broadcast after her Eurovision Song Contest victory prior to her birthday Mr Mastorakis makes a mistake quoting Vicky's age as 20. He is corrected by both Vicky's father and by herself and she says that she is 22. This interview is on YouTube for anybody to hear. This again clearly gives a 1949 birth year.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by217.28.10.124(talk)23:51, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
The Guinness encyclopedia of Music and the Bertelsmann Lexica which are the British and German equivalent of a who's who in show business and music BOTH give 1948 as the year of birth of Vicky Leandros.— Precedingunsignedcomment added by92.39.197.134(talk)14:14, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
