The Merck Manuals(outside the U.S. and Canada:The MSD Manuals;Chinese:Mặc sa đông khám và chữa bệnh sổ tay;pinyin:Mòshādōng Zhěnliáo Shǒucè) are medical references published by the Americanpharmaceutical companyMerck & Co.(known as MSD outside theUnited StatesandCanada), that cover a wide range ofmedicaltopics, including disorders, tests,diagnoses,anddrugs.The manuals have been published since 1899, when Merck & Co. was still asubsidiaryof theGermancompanyMerck.

These manuals were originally developed in book form, but have been updated and converted todigital formats,includingwebsitesandmobile apps.Digital versions also includeaudio,3D models,andanimations.[1]
The first Merck Manual,Merck's Manual of the Materia Medica(1899), was a smallreference bookthat became widely used by the 1980s. It had also become the world'sbest-sellingmedical text. Since then, several manuals have been produced, and are regularly updated. The titles include:[2]
- The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy,commonly calledThe Merck Manual.This is the descendant of the 1899 book.
- The Merck Manual—Home Health Handbookis aconsumeredition, introduced in 1997. An updated third edition was released in 2009.
- The Merck Manual of Patient Symptomswas a small printed reference summary of symptoms intended formedical students,physician assistants,and the like.
- The Merck Veterinary Manual,introduced in 1955, coversanimal healthcare.
- The Merck Manual for Pet Healthis a consumer, orpet owner,edition.
- The Merck Manual of Geriatricswas introduced in 1990, focusing on health care for olderpatients.
- The Merck Manual of Health & Agingis a consumer edition.
The Manuals forhuman healthwere converted to aweb-basedformat in 2015 and are hosted on MerckManuals in the US and Canada, and MSDManuals throughout the rest of the world. These sites include two versions tailored for consumers and forhealth care professionalsrespectively. The Manuals are available online in 12 languages.[3][4]The Manuals for animal health were converted to a web-based format in 2002 and are hosted on MerckVetManual (outside the U.S. and Canada MSDVetManual ).[5]
