Travemünde(German:[tʁaːvəˈmʏndə] ) is a borough ofLübeck,Germany,located at the mouth of the riverTraveinLübeck Bay.It began life as a fortress built byHenry the Lion,Duke of Saxony,in the 12th century to guard the mouth of the Trave, and theDanessubsequently strengthened it. It became a town in 1317 and in 1329 passed into the possession of the free city of Lübeck, to which it has since belonged. Itsfortificationswere demolished in 1807.[1]
Travemünde has been aseaside resortsince 1802, and isGermany'slargestferry porton theBaltic Seawith connections toSweden,Finland,Russia,LatviaandEstonia.Thelighthouseis the oldest on the German Baltic coast, dating from 1539. Another attraction of Travemünde is theFlying P-LinerPassat,amuseum shipanchored in the mouth of theTrave.
The annualTravemünder Wocheis a traditionalsailingrace week inNorthern Europe.The annualSand festivalin Travemünde is known as theSand World.
