TheUlichesorUgliches(Romanian:UliciorUglici;Russian:УличиorУгличи,UlichiorUglichi;Ukrainian:УличіУгличі,UlychiorUhlychi) were atribeofEarly East Slavswho, between the eighth and the tenth centuries, inhabited (along with theTivertsi)Bessarabia,and the territories along the LowerDnieper,Bug Riverand theBlack Sealittoral.

Ethnonym

The tribal name comes[citation needed]from a location called Oglos or Onglos by theByzantinechroniclersTheophanes the ConfessorandNikephoros I of Constantinople,possibly to be identified withPeuce Island.The word may derive from Slavicâgul'corner', or, according toSteven Runciman,fromagul'enclosure'.

They were mentioned asUnliziby theBavarian Geographer,described as "populus multus" and having 418gords-settlements.[1]The Uliches long struggled against theKievanprincesOleg,IgorandSviatoslav Igorevichfor theirindependence,until a Kievan commanderSveneldcaptured their capital,Peresechen(nearOrhei,in present-dayMoldova), around 940. In the mid-10th century the Ulich lands paid tribute toSveneld.The Uliches were last mentioned in the 970s.
