Presentation of Wikipedia
editHello Axl. I noticed that you made a comment that working on Wikipedia was now difficult due to style and placement changes that have happened. It should be possible to help you by making some changes in your own personal style sheet. That would allow you to have Wikilinks and text in what ever colour you choose. It is also possible to hide useless elements that may get in the way. For example the logo can disappear. I myself have decluttered my experience by hiding some Wikipedia interface links that I never use. Let me know if you are interested.Graeme Bartlett(talk)05:22, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for offering to help, Graeme. Yes, I am certainly willing to try out your suggestions! (Although I am not optimistic.)Axl¤[Talk]15:42, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
- OK so I need to find out what you want to change. My first question is what skin are you using? I use Monobook, but anything should be customisable. The next question is what do you want to change? For example we can change the colour of Wikilinks (and some others), say to yellow by putting this in the stylesheet: "a { color: #ffff00;}". You can make the Wikipedia logo become invisible with "#p-logo a {background-image:none!important;}" but you may want to do something different like shrink it or move it out of the way.Graeme Bartlett(talk)11:09, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Are you still involved with Featured Articles?
editI came across thenomination for Boogeyman 2and found myself quite disgusted by the low bar that was set- it seems like this was closer to GA standards, though I wouldn't have likely endorsed that promotion in itself. After seeing FANs time and time again, I'm a little put off by this one. When you have time, would you like to take a look at this and let me know if this was upheld correctly? I'm unsure if it is actually below par or if I'm simply disenchanted from past experiences.DARTHBOTTOtalk•cont20:21, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

References
editThere are some concerns about my use of a source for content on vaginal epithelium. In hopes to declutter the talk page of the article, here are the references that I am using to support the content describing the multi-layered vaginal epithelium. I want to post it on the talk page, but hesitate because I have messed up the threads of the ongoing discussion there:
- Fundementals of Toxicologic Pathology by Hascheck, 978-0123704696and
- The Structure of the Human Vaginal Stratum Corneum and its Role in Immune Defense
- another - {{cite book | last = Gupta | first = Ramesh | title = Reproductive and developmental toxicology | publisher = Academic Press | location = London | year = 2011 | isbn = 978-0-12-382032-7 |page 1005 }}
- Best Regards,Barbara (WVS)✐✉23:45, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input on theVaginatalk page. The references listed above are meant to support the content regarding the different cell types that make up the vaginal epithelium. I don't think any of them have anything to do with 'keratinization'. Sorry for the confusion. The discussion became so long that it was difficult to sort out the comments regarding the cell types from 'kerantinization'. I do believe that this is the longest talk page discussion that I've participated in that centered around the prefix 'non'. Best Regards,Barbara (WVS)✐✉13:02, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

editThank you for your edits toVagina. This article is being reviewed for GA status. The talk page contains numerous discussions about content and referencing. Hi Axl, I note from your userpage that you have a special interest in pulmonology but that you don't routinely do GAN reviews anymore. I have done a GA review for theHemothoraxpage, but as a cardiac electrophyiologist this isn't my specialist area and I have asked for a 2nd opinion.User:David notMDhas kindly agreed to help with this but acknowledges that he is not an expert in pulmonology either. How would you feel about breaking your usual rule and taking a quick glance at the page for overall factual accuracy? - the more gnomic work is already being tackled. Orangutan FAC
editHello. I hope to bring Orangutan to FAC. I had made it a GA years ago and since then more information has been added by others. I trust they are most reliable but just in case, could you please do a spot check of sources you can access? Thank you.LittleJerry(talk)23:08, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
Upcoming FAC nomination
editHi Axl. I see that you're a member of Wikiproject Role Playing Games. In about a week, I'll be nominatingHyborian Warfor it's second FAC nomination. Improvements are complete and it's getting a peer review now. However, I'm concerned that it'll sit unreviewed when nominated as it's kind of a niche topic. Would you mind reviewing it when it posts? Would be happy to advise you when it's ready, if so. Thanks for your time.Airborne84(talk)06:16, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
FAC review of Biblical criticism two years ago
editIn October of 2018 you graciously participated in a FAC review ofBiblical criticism.Unfortunately, I was going through the end stages of a long period of harassment and couldn't quite focus, then left WP altogether before the FAC was completed. The person that harassed me has since been banned from WP, as I was not the only person they harassed, so after a year and a half's absence, and some encouragement from some of the other exceptional editors on WP, I have come back to this wonderful place--and Biblical criticism.
I have spent the last month going over every reference in the entire article. I removed extra references and narrowed down pages so they are easier to find and I believe they are all completely accurate: what the text says the reference says is what the reference says. I have tightened and polished and added some content and deleted some other. I believe it reflects that 'professional' standard that FA looks for now. I wouldn't be ashamed to have submitted it as a research paper in grad school.
I would really love for you to take a look at it with the idea of renominating it for FA. I think it's an important article--if how many times it's content has been copied since I wrote it is any indication--it is. Please consider it. Your opinion is valued. Thank you so much,Jenhawk777(talk)05:19, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- If you looked at it and ran the copyvio detector, you found a violation from[2]but I assure you that is a backwards violation. I have pinged two computer gurus hereAlanM1andPaleoNeonatefor help in proving that, and if they are able, I know they will help because they are the best people anywhere, but until then, all I can do is show that the detector did not detect this website at any time before today--because it wasn't there. The person who published it wrote a date of 2010 on the front page, but that's untrue. Biblical criticism has been repeatedly checked for copyright violations since 2017, and it never previously detected this article. I have run the copyvio almost daily, sometimes more than once in a day, since I found the first backwards violation. This would be the third backwards violation on this article! Is that normal? These last two appear to be from sites that sell things--I think Alan called them clickbait. They publish something people will click on in hopes of getting to reroute you to their 'coupons' and such. This one is a download that I am afraid to actually download it and see what it is as I don't know what it might do that I don't want. Please don't disqualify this article because of this. I am so distressed by this I don't know what to do. This article represents months of my work and none of it is plagiarized.Jenhawk777(talk)19:23, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
- Just to keep everything together, here's what I wrote on my talk page:
It's clearly a copy of the Wikipedia article. The first telltale sign is the presence of the footnote markers (e.g. "[17]: 20 [36]" on page 3). Another is page 7, at the bottom of which is all of the hatnotes from within the article, starting with "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the academic treatment..." and several "Main article:" hatnotes. If you download the PDF, open it with Adobe Reader (or Acrobat), and look at the document properties, it was created on 2020-09-03, just a couple weeks ago.

- I don't usually check articles for copyright violations. I am happy to accept the opinions of other editors who have investigated and affirm that the Wikipedia article does not contain copyrighted information.Axl¤[Talk]17:11, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
- Totally cool. I hope you will have the opportunity to look at it.A. Parrotsaid he will have time to check the references in October, so I am going to renominate after they have had time to do so. Any input from you would probably save me grief down the road, but if you want to wait till it's nominated I understand. Thank you again for all you contributed two years ago.Jenhawk777(talk)23:25, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- It was recommended to me that I go back and ask those involved in the first FAC to come back and work on this one, so I went back looking for names, and that was when I really took in how much work you did with me on that first FAC. I feel like I owe you more gratitude that I ever expressed, but that I also owe you a personal apology for bailing like I did. I didn't stop to think about how it would impact anyone else, and I am so sorry for that. You were incredible, and I just tanked the whole thing. I'm sorry for being so selfish and insensitive. Morgagni hernia
editAxl, per your pulmonology expertise, have you any interest in helping me write Morgagni hernia? I am not thinking of NOW, rather after we get into the dead of winter and I am bored as an oyster, still stuck at home per COVID. I have several good journal reviews, and think we can do much better than the few sentences now atcongenital diaphragmatic hernia. My son, in his mid-30s, recently had surgery for a Larrey-Morgagni hernia, extremely rare, and it was surprising to find that there is practically no information about it anywhere on the Internet, and fortunately I am comfortable reading journal articles. When he was first diagnosed, I did not even realize it fell under the pulmonology specialty, so wasted a lot of time figuring out who to consult (my son lives overseas). I'd like to have Wikipedia provide something for the rest of the world! If you are interested, perhaps we could tackle it in January or so...SandyGeorgia(Talk)16:44, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Sandy. I hope that your son is okay. Yes, I am certainly happy to help you with this. Let me know when you're ready.Axl¤[Talk]18:53, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- Will do! My son seems to have come through fine, and is now back overseas and at work; the whole thing has been quite a mystery, since he was a very healthy baby and is an extremely fit adult, totally asymptomatic. Best,SandyGeorgia(Talk)19:40, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you
editI was just reading some of the exchange on Biblical criticism's review and I got to feeling overwhelmingly grateful for you and your dependable showing up, calm presence and good humor. Thank you for doing this and most of all thank you for not making a sometimes difficult process harder. You're clear and reasonable and not unnecessarily mean about it. Thank you, and I really mean it. I just needed to say it.Jenhawk777(talk)20:08, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
- I have profound respect for editors like you who tirelessly work without pay to improve Wikipedia and provide a free educational resource for everyone. This especially noteworthy at FAC where a nominator can easily be attacked by multiple critics. I know what it's like to be on your side of the FAC process. On an article that I had spent nine months writing, I still remember one critic who wrote "The History section is a joke." And everyone's a critic, right? It is too easy to criticize, and nominators can easily become demoralized. So I try to keep my criticism constructive, and I try to help the nominator where I can.Axl¤[Talk]12:10, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

RfA 2021 review update
editThanks so much for participating inPhase 1of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1,PrimefacandWugapodes.
The following had consensus support of participating editors:
- Corrosive RfA atmosphere
- The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
- Level of scrutiny
- Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
- Standards needed to pass keep rising
- It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
- Too few candidates
- There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
- "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins
The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:
- Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere. - Admin permissions and unbundling
There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas. - RfA should not be the only road to adminship
Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.
Please consider joining thebrainstormingwhich will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.
There are 2 future mailings planned. One when Phase 2 opens and one with the results of Phase 2. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourselfhere.

editInvitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
editDear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (andUser:Piotruson Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. RFA 2021 Completed
editThe 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants)ideaswere proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particularPrimefac,Lee Vilenski, andYmblanterfor closing the most difficult conversations and forTonyBallionifor closing the review of one of the closes.
The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:
- Revision of standard question 1 to
Why are you interested in becoming an administrator?
Special thanks toxaosfluxfor help with implementation. - A new process,Administrative Action Review(XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that ofdeletion reviewandmove review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
- Removal ofautopatrolfrom the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks toWugapodesandSeddonfor their help with implementation.
The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:
- An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
- An optional election process (proposal & discussionandclose review & re-close)
Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so atRFA's talk pageor an appropriatevillage pump.
A final and huge thanksall those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.
This is the final update with no further talk page messages planned.

Hippo paper
editHello. I need help understanding and breaking downthis paper. What does this quote mean?
"Our observations indicate that the hippopotamus is likely to be a bihemispheric sleeper that expresses REM sleep. The novel features of the cholinergic system suggest the presence of an undescribed sleep state in the hippopotamus, as well as the possibility that this animal could, more rapidly than other mammals, switch cortical electroencephalographic activity from one state to another.".LittleJerry(talk)21:22, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- Both hemispheres of the brain go to sleep at the same time. This is the case for most mammals. However manyaquatic mammalsare notable exceptions and have unihemispheric sleep.
- The second statement implies that hippos might have a form of sleep that has not previously been observed in mammals, although this is somewhat speculative.
- The last statement implies that they might be able to transition between differentphases of sleepmore quickly than other mammals.
- If you are thinking about using this source to support a statement in the article "Hippopotamus",I suggest something like" The hippopotamus has bihemispheric sleep (both hemispheres of the brain sleep at the same time). Despite this, it is able to sleep while submerged, and can intermittently float to the surface to breathe while still asleep. "Axl¤[Talk]02:10, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Electric eel hemoglobin
editHi. Would you be able to break this down for me? Thanks.
"The blood of the Electric Eel contains only one hemoglobin component. The primary structures of the Alpha - and beta-chains are presented. These were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography, using a new kind of buffer system. The Alpha -chains are acetylated, and consist of 142 residues, while the beta-chains are not blocked, and consist of 147 residues."
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2713104/LittleJerry(talk)13:51, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, LittleJerry. Sentence 1 means that the blood only has one type of haemoglobin. (In humans, adults have two types of haemoglobin: HbA and HbA2. However human fetuses and infants have adifferent typeof haemoglobin.) The paper describes the technique used to sequence the amino acids of the eel's haemoglobin. I don't think that there is anything here worth adding to Wikipedia's article "Electric eel".Perhaps at most, you might say that the eel's haemoglobin amino acid residues have been sequenced.Axl¤[Talk]07:03, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

- Passive body movement and gas exchange in the frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) and goanna (Varanus gouldii)

Dinosaur larynx
editThis text is fromPinacosaurus. It is about 99 percent copied from the source. Would you be able to paraphase it better? Thanks.LittleJerry(talk)22:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
"The preserved larynx as revealed by their examinations, is composed of a cricoid and arytenoid like in non-avian reptiles, but is simultaneously specialized with the firm and kinetic cricoid-arytenoid joint, a prominent arytenoid process, a long arytenoid, and an enlarged cricoid as a possible vocal modifier like in birds. The structure was also ossified, suggesting that some non-avian dinosaur groups like ankylosaurids had ossified larynxes."LittleJerry(talk)22:49, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- The larynx was comprised of cricoid and arytenoid cartilages, similar to those of non-avian reptiles. However its mobile cricoid-arytenoid joint and long arytenoid cartilages would have enabled easy opening of the glottis, thus allowing air-flow control similar to that of birds. Also, the cartilages were ossified, implying that laryngeal ossification is a feature of some non-avian dinosaurs.Axl¤[Talk]16:48, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

- Humans do have cricoid and arytenoid cartilages. Howeverthe paperstates "The larynx of Pinacosaurus is composed of the cricoid and arytenoid like non-avian reptiles."It doesn't say that the structure of the cartilages is like non-avian dinosaurs. (Although I suspect that the structure is also similar.)Axl¤[Talk]21:31, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

Elephant trunk
editHello. Could you paraphase this statement? Thank you.
"...the trunk tip velocity obeys a power law with its path curvature, similar to human hand drawing movements."LittleJerry(talk)01:34, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- How about: "The tip of the trunk can be moved in a way similar to the human hand."Axl¤[Talk]16:30, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks is there a better way to state this? "transport of objects involves the proximal propagation of an inward curvature front initiated at the tip".LittleJerry(talk)18:46, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- Objects grasped by the end of the trunk can be moved to the mouth by curving the trunk inwards.Axl¤[Talk]19:24, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

Lung cancerscheduled for TFA
editAs perthis discussion,I've had to make a late substitution for July 5, and the consensus appears to be to rerunLung cancer, seeWikipedia:Today's featured article/July 1, 2023.I hope that's OK. I've rewritten the blurb to comply with current formatting and length, but you are welcome to make amendments.
If you wish to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article, you can do so atWikipedia talk:Today's featured article/July 2023. I suggest that you watchlistWikipedia:Main Page/Errorsfrom the day before this appears on Main Page. ThanksJimfbleak-talk to me?15:36, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
Polar bear thermoregulation
editWhat's a good way to summarize thisabstract?LittleJerry(talk)21:40, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- "Polar bears maintain their core body temperature at about 36.9°C." I don't think that the other details are relevant to a general encyclopedia.Axl¤[Talk]19:24, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Axl,could you also help summarize thisabstract?LittleJerry(talk)18:40, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
- Maximum corticosteroid-binding capacity of corticosteroid-binding globulin in polar bear serum correlates with stress in polar bears, and this has increased with climate warming.Axl¤[Talk]20:33, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Koala teeth
editWhat's a way to paraphase this in laymen's terms? Thank you.
"forward displacement of the palate, enlargement of the occlusal surface of the molar teeth, thickening of the maxillae above the toothrow with resultant lowering of the occlusal plane of the cheekteeth relative to the glenoid fossa, and a decrease in the size of the pterygoid fossae"LittleJerry(talk)01:01, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- How about this: "the palate moves forward, enlargement of the grinding surfaces of the molar teeth, thickening of the bone above the upper teeth, and lower position of the molar teeth relative to the jaw joint". I didn't include the decreased size of the pterygoid fossa. I can't think of a layman's way to describe this.Axl¤[Talk]16:26, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Human vs ape heart articles
editCan you help me summarizeThesearticles?Thank you.LittleJerry(talk)04:43, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thefirst paper:compared to the chimpanzee and gorilla lineages, the human lineage has evolved to perform moderate-intensity endurance physical activities more effectively. This includes adaptations of the human heart that increasestroke volumeandcardiac output.Axl¤[Talk]11:29, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thesecond paper:compared to other great apes, humans tend to have a higher total energy expenditure. This requires a high cardiac output. When adjusted for body mass, the diameter of theaortain humans is proportionately larger than the aortas of other great apes. This contributes towards increasing cardiac output.Axl¤[Talk]11:36, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Crocodile jaw muscles
editWhat a better way to put "The powerful jaw muscles are all on the median aspect of the mandible, thus broading the posterior skull."[3]LittleJerry(talk)23:18, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm not sure what they mean by "median". I suppose that it should mean the symphysis in the midline, but perhaps they really mean "medial" (the inner surface of the mandible)? In either case, I don't see how presence of powerful jaw muscles there would cause broadness of the posterior skull.Axl¤[Talk]08:15, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

Humpback brain
editHello, what's a good way to summarizethis article, particularlyOur findings demonstrate that the cortex of M. novaeangliae is characterized by a similar degree of regional complexity as that of smaller-size cetaceans that have been investigated in much greater detail as to the histologic structure of their brain. We observed that the cerebral cortex of Megaptera possesses well-defined cortical fields whose boundaries can be established using Nissl-stained preparations with sufficient certainty.andIn this respect, it is worth noting that the cerebral cortex of Megaptera stands out owing to two remarkable histologic features. One is the modular organization of layer II that is observed over a vast extent of occipital cortex... The other histologic specialization of Megaptera cerebral cortex was the surprising observation of spindle cells in a comparable set of cortical areas as originally reported in hominids.LittleJerry(talk)01:24, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- 1. "The humpback whale's brain has similar complexity to the brains of smaller whales and dolphins."
- 2. While the authors describe "two remarkable histological features", it is unfortunate that they are not able to assign any specific function to the layer II occipital islands or to the presence of spindle cells. Therefore I don't think that these findings should be included in a Wikipedia article.Axl¤[Talk]08:46, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. How aboutthis one?LittleJerry(talk)00:04, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- "Sensory nerve cells in the skin are adapted to withstand the high water pressure of diving."Axl¤[Talk]20:41, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
