Extensive TeXification, etc
editHi. Thank you for your contributions. And just a few notes about style. First, putting too much TeX and replacing HTML with TeX is not always a good idea. Per themath style manual, inline formulas better be left as HTML, so ''x''2 or <math>x^2</math> are better than <math>x^2\,</math>.
Also, and more importantly, if there is a formula at the end of sentence, one should put a period (.) at the end of that formula, it signifies that the sentence is over.
These are small things, but I thought I'd let you know. You can reply here if you have comments. Thanks.Oleg Alexandrov(talk)15:55, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Moreover, as I think Oleg Alexandrov already pointed out to you, although "displayed"TeXlooks very good on Wikipedia, "inline" TeX often looks terrible.Michael Hardy21:57, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

BV functions
editHi. I see you did expand quite a bit thebounded variationarticle. If you would like to write more on BV functions in n-dimensions, note the following article onPlanetMath:BV function. That stuff can be copied legally to Wikipedia (see ourWP:PMEXproject), and we have atoolwhich can easily convert things to Wikipedia format (you would need the article id to use the tool, which you can see in the URL of that article, id=6969).
So, I wonder if you are interested in expandingbounded variationwith that material. I can help along the way with formatting and stuff (I know about BV functions also, but not a whole lot). You can reply here in either case (I will keep this page on my watchlist).Oleg Alexandrov(talk)02:45, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Oleg. Yes, I am interested in expandingBounded variationwith the article onPlanetMathBV function:as you can see I added an external link to that page some times ago. Of course, I would like to add more from other references (mainly from Giusti and Hudjaev and Vol'pert books, since they are "richer" both from the theory and applications point of view), and of course I would be glad if you decide to help me enriching this voice: recently I edited theGermvoice withNbarth, and he helped me a lot showing me the deepsheaf theoreticaspect of the subject. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have anexplanationlinking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

Mihlin/Mikhlin
editSuits me fine. It makes sense for the transliteration to match that of his Wikipedia biography page. Thanks for the heads-up, nonetheless.:-) (By the way, not that it matters, but I think that as well as Stein, Grafakos uses the "Mihlin" transliteration in his books, though I don't have my copy to hand to check...)Tcnuk(talk)14:26, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
- Probably even Grafakos refers mainly to the English translation of (Mikhlin 1948) where the transliteration is "Mihlin" (or at least I think so... since I haven't a copy of the translated paper:D).Daniele.tampieri(talk)14:42, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

I have marked you as a reviewer
editI have added the "reviewers" property to your user account. This property is related to thePending changessystem that is currently being tried. This system loosens page protection by allowing anonymous users to make "pending" changes which don't become "live" until they're "reviewed". However, logged-in users always see the very latest version of each page with no delay. A good explanation of the system is given inthis image. The system is only being used for pages that would otherwise be protected from editing.
If there are "pending" (unreviewed) edits for a page, they will be apparent in a page's history screen; you do not have to go looking for them. There is, however, a list of all articles with changes awaiting review atSpecial:OldReviewedPages.Because there are so few pages in the trial so far, the latter list is almost always empty. The list of all pages in the pending review system is atSpecial:StablePages.
To use the system, you can simply edit the page as you normally would, but you should also mark the latest revision as "reviewed" if you have looked at it to ensure it isn't problematic. Edits should generally be accepted if you wouldn't undo them in normal editing: they don't have obvious vandalism, personal attacks, etc. If an edit is problematic, you can fix it by editing or undoing it, just like normal. You are permitted to mark your own changes as reviewed.
The "reviewers" property does not obligate you to do any additional work, and if you like you can simply ignore it. The expectation is that many users will have this property, so that they can review pending revisions in the course of normal editing. However, if you explicitly want to decline the "reviewer" property, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. — Carl(CBM·talk)12:33, 18 June 2010 (UTC) — Carl(CBM·talk)13:23, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi
editSorry I hastily deleted it:( (didn't think about it). My name is Christos chatzifountas. The case i wrote is not the one dimensional it merely uses one dimensional BMO on the circle to define the BMOH on the disc (thus the change from I to D in H(D)). The point is that currently the research is centered on analytic and harmonic hardy spaces, and when you use the term "Hardy space" you usualy mean the analytic Hardy space in the disc or in the plane (one can use the one or the other and with some care the results are interchangeable) so i changed the one that used Feferman's notation to the more current "real valued harmonic Hardy spaces".The rest of the notation about BMO is used "as is". Also i plan to put something about the VMOA, the dual of H^1(D) (or H^1(R^2_+)). Thank you for correcting the entries and if you find something ambiguous please do it again:)
I added at the end Daniel' notes they are pretty advanced and cover pretty much everything in the subject. Of course there are other applications of bmo (in probability theory and PDES) and if you want to take a look there are references there.— Precedingunsignedcomment added byPalepson(talk•contribs)08:56, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

- No, it apparently didn't attract anyone's attention. However, I did not solicit anyone for an answer: are you interested in it? You are welcome,Daniele.tampieri(talk)16:30, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
- I was looking for the author field (to give proper credit to Maligranda atTorsten Carleman), and then I saw your proposal. So I guess we are now 2 in favour (with no-one opposed), this is consensus, right?Sasha(talk)16:47, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
I think it is so, and I also think that there are other ones that would like to use such a feature: after all, even ifO'ConnorandRobertsonwrote the major part of Mactutor bios, other authors contributed to the project, and a correct attribution is a nice thing, especially in Wikipedia. Shoshana Kamin
editHi Daniele,
I have looked through the article aboutShoshana Kamin, and one thing surprised me: why do you write "at the same time and independently of Olga Oleinik"? S.K. was a PhD student of Oleinik (seeSusanna L'vovna Kamenomostskayaat theMathematics Genealogy Project), so independently can hardly apply. Also, Rubinstein writes in several places that Oleinik generalised the results of S.K. (pp.11–12, 310).
Best, Sasha(talk)01:48, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sasha,
- concerning my entry aboutShoshana Kamin,I wrote that (almost surely wrong) statement probably due to the fact that I read too quickly and not carefully enough the sources I reported there and on the related entry aboutOlga Arsenievna Oleinik. As a matter of fact, I created the stub entry on S.K. in order to provide context for the O.O. entry on anotability basis, but then I "frozen" my contributions to the two entries without reviewing my writings carefully since
- I am working on several topics other than biographies, more interesting and much needed for my professional improvement,
- I am still learning theRussian language, and my level is still beyond the elementary level needed to read the original papers of S.K., O.O. and other related sources and, even if I own a copy of Rubinstein work, I decided to not continue my contribution until I am not able to review all sources (as you may have already guessed, I have a restricted access to the resources, including English translations of original works, normally available to academicians since I'm not an academician).
- I wasn't able to find much material (especially surveys) related to S.K. biography or research/teaching work on the web.
- These are the main reasons that probably caused the occurrence of that and other not completely correct/dead wrong statements in the main text of the entry:-D. If you would like to review and correct the entry, I'd be truly happy. At last, I want also to thank you for finding the{{MathGenealogy}}reference and the complete Russian name of S.K.: I'll surely add 'em to the entry and correct the imprecise statement you found, when I'll have some time. Best,Daniele.tampieri(talk)13:09, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Daniele,
- I did not mean to criticise you, just to make sure I read the sources properly myself (since you wrote this at two places). Though I am a native Russian speaker and do have access to some of the resources, I did not manage to find good sources either (even for what I am almost sure is true, e.g. that she is the daughter of the Habima actress Hava Eidelman).
- Best regards,
- Sasha(talk)15:33, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
- PS your talk page is on my watchlist (from our previous correspondence), so you do not have to leave talkback messages.
- Hi Sasha,
- please do not worry, I did not feel criticized, at least in a non-constructive way: I'm just an electronics engineer so I'm used to analyze my design choices in an articulated way, to understand the reasons of success and failure.;-D:-D:-D:-D You are welcome!
- You helped me a lot with my proposal on the{{MacTutor}}template (did you notice that I'm trying some solutions?), and I also like your contributions, especially the one onMikhail Kadets,a scientist whose research on series on (Banach or Locally convex) vector spaces I appreciate very much.
- Well, now let's go back to theShoshana Kaminentry: you have done a nice work, but our problem is still that there are few sources about her biography on the web. A possible solution would be to consult theyearbooksofTel-Aviv University,if this university publishes a yearbook: this is usually a reliablesecondary sourceand refers of career steps and other academic events, interesting from a biographical point of view. At present I'm trying this solution to improve the biographical part of theGiovanni Battista Rizzaentry: I wrote to theRectorof theUniversità di Parmato ask for the permission to consult their yearbook archives (this is the praxis I've chosen, even if the same series is freely accessible in several other libraries) and an expert librarian is now helping me in my search of published sources. Would it be possible to try this solution even for S,K.? All the Best,Daniele.tampieri(talk)12:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Daniele,
- I will try to check about the yearbook.
- Now, another question: are you sure about the first name? I was sure it is Сусанна; I did not find a good ref., but thistext avoutFelix Berezinagrees with me.
- All the best,Sasha(talk)15:20, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sasha,
- I hope you'll succed in find something in the yearbook. Now the question: No, I'm not sure; the source you supplied is right (is it a reliable source according toWP:RS?Would it be possible to cite it? It seems to me that it contains also an article on Solomon Mikhlin used in the Russian Wiki). I first translitterated her name using grammar rules and obtained "Сусанна" but after aGooglesearch I found out that this is not a common Russian name, therefore I decided to trust again on Google by using amachine translation.Lesson learned: trust grammar rules!:-D
- Now I must justify other changes and I've done and also other peculiarities of my
- WP:APPENDIXdescribes the standard structure of sections of a Wikipedia entry. I noticed this only a month ago, and found that almost all the entries I worked to were out of standard: from then onward I change the structure of the entries I am working to according to this policy.
- as you surely noted, I use heavily the{{citation}}template, since as you can see in theWP:CTpage, you can cite all kind of sources using this template, and also it helps me very much when the source has a non standard structure, i.e. it is published in series, is a paper in a series of proceedings, collection or other.
- I do not usually fold the fields of the template (I keep them vertically aligned) since it saves me and other occasional editors time when adding some detail to sources. However this is largely a matter of taste, and of course it is not a rule.
- I expand a little bit the content of the footnotes, if possible, but this is again a matter of taste, and again it is not a rule.
- If you find disturbing my edit habits, please tell me and I'll do all the best I can to improve it.:-D
- Now back to theShoshana Kaminentry: if your search in the yearbook will be successful and you'll be able to find more biographical details, we can put in the entry a{{Infobox scientist}}template. Maybe you would like to use it in the entries about scientists you created: someone do not like it, but I think it lets you give a quick and informative look on the contents of a bio entry. Well, that's all for now. I hope I have not annoyed you too much!:-DDaniele.tampieri(talk)16:51, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Daniele,
- I never had the patience to read WP:APPENDIX, but I will do my best to follow your conventions (although I apologise in advance, Michael Hardy had to work for half a year before I learned the difference between ndash, -, and minus:).
- The problem with these sources is that I think Tikhomirov (as well as Milman) wrote from memory. There is a paper of S.K. dated 1973 with TAU affiliation (her last paper with the name Kamenomostskaya), it is more reliable for chronology. Except for that (and the yearbook which I will try to check), I do not have good ideas for secondary sources.
- thiscontains some information about Hava Eidelman (I can translate it for you), but the connection to S.K. is not mentioned there.
- Best regards,Sasha(talk)22:23, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sasha,
- after solving the{{MacTutor}}template problem, we can talk about ourShoshana Kaminentry: first of all, I think it would be not useful to translatethe link you foundnow, since it does not specify the relationship about H.E. and S.K.: maybe it will be a nice source of information in later stages of our development, if we get other sources confirming their family tie. Now I have a few questions:
- Is its 1973 paperthe onehe published in theArchive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis?Otherwise do you have a PDF copy of it? I would be interesting to cite it, even just to have a source which confirms her name change.
- I would like to place in the "Pubblications" sections more references to her work, basing on the works by Rădulescu and Vázquez: in particular I would like to cite its 1975 Archive paper and the other one Vázquez acknowledges as fundamental in the theory of the porous medium equation. Did you think it could be a good idea? I'd also would like to read more of Rădulescu, in order to detail more of her work on other topics by citing other papers.
- Now I have a question about another entry I am working to, the one aboutAizik Isaakovich Vol'pert.Do you think that if I write to theTechnionlibrary asking for infos about him published in their yearbook I'll get an answer? I asked to his son Vladimir and Vitaly to write a review about him, but they are very busy and the haven't been able to write and publish such a paper (and I also suspect it would be difficult to find a journal interested in publishing it), therefore it would be nice to find other biographical sources. All the best,Daniele.tampieri(talk)13:18, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Daniele,
- the paper you found is better, it indeed confirms the name change. I saw the one in Isr. Journal, "The asymptotic behavior of the solution of the filtration equation", I can send you the PDF.
- why not?
- you can try. I have not found the old yearbooks in the Tel Aviv library catalogue (perhaps it is better to write them too). Also you can try contacting one of the organisers of the Volpert conference. I will also look for some sources.
- Best,Sasha(talk)20:28, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Daniele,
- Hi Sasha,
- if you can send me the PDF of her paper in the Israel Journal of mathematics, I'll surely cite it and other papers marked as fundamental by Rădulescu and Vázquez: I'll also contact the library of Tel-Aviv University and of the Technion in order to check for availability of yearbook informations about the two scientists. I must say I have already asked to the organizers of the conference, but they had no useful (i.e. Wikipedia verifiable) data on him: they kindly passed my request to the Vol'pert brothers, who anyway were already contacted by me. However, you can try, and as usual any nice addition to the entry is welcome!Daniele.tampieri(talk)18:25, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

File:Solomon Mikhlin.jpgmissing description details
editis missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors make better use of the image, and it will be more informative to readers.
If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed fordeletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

As I stated in theimage page, they digitized it and I uploaded it to the EnglishWikipedia:yesterday I also submitted a newDeclaration of consent for all enquiriesin order to remove allcopyrightproblems about it. A.I.Volpert in Mathematical Chemistry
editDear Colleague, for your attention, I prepared (incomplete) bibliography of the works of A.I.Volpert in Math. Chemistry. The first paper has been very important for Russian Math. Chem. community but has been published in the preprint form only. The second paper about Quasi-equilibrium approximation (if we follow precisely the chemical kinetics terminology) had also great influence. The two series of papers, about bifurcation analysis and about waves (with some intersection between them) are seminal and very well known.
