Early life

Sharma spent his early childhood in a slum in Delhi.[1]Though he was interested in acting in films from his early days, it was theater that inspired him initially, especially after he happened to listen toSanjeev Kumar's interview on radio. He joined a small Punjabi theater group to perform various odd jobs in Delhi, e.g. selling tickets or serving tea.[citation needed]

He is an alumnus ofNational School of Drama,New Delhi, India and theCanadian Film CentreinToronto, Ontario,Canada.[2][3][4][5]He graduated from the National School of Drama, India in 2003.[6]

Career

Sharma made his acting debut withDoordarshan's television seriesBharat Ek Khojin 1989, followed by his feature film debutKrishnain 1996, he gained attention for his portrayal of Nandakishore Awasthi inAamir Khan'sTaare Zameen Parin 2007. He was later nominated for his first everScreen AwardforBest Actor in a Supporting RoleforTaare Zameen Par,but eventually lost to his co-starAamir Khan.

Following the success ofTaare Zameen Par,Sharma played the servant Balvant in thehorrorfilm1920,the title character's landlord in thepsychological thrillerfilmKarthik Calling Karthik,Gaindha Singh in theromantic thrillerfilmSaheb, Biwi Aur Gangster,Major Masand in the biographical drama filmPaan Singh Tomar,Ehsaan Qureshi in the critically acclaimedcrime actionfilmGangs of Wasseypur,and Dilip in the Indian-Australian-Americanco-production,Hotel Mumbai.Sharma metDev Patelon the set ofHotel Mumbaiand stayed in touch with the film's producer who called him for an audition with Patel forMonkey Man.He played the leader of ahijracommunity in the film which was released in 2024.[7]

Since 2020, he has starred in theAmazon'sseriesPaatal Lokas DCP Bhagat.
