Texas,officially theState of Texas,is the second largeststatein theUnited Statesby bothareaandpopulation.Geographically located in thesouth centralpart of the country, Texas shares borders with the other US states ofLouisianato the east,Arkansasto the northeast,Oklahomato the north,New Mexicoto the west, and theMexican statesofChihuahua,Coahuila,Nuevo León,andTamaulipasto the southwest, while theGulf of Mexicois to the southeast. Its state government is currently controlled by theRepublican Party,and its current governor isGreg Abbott.
Texas was originally a territory ofMexicowhich seceded in theTexas Revolutionand wasannexed by the United Statesat the beginning of theMexican–American War.It also joined theConfederate States of Americaduring theAmerican Civil War.Houstonis themost populous cityin Texas and thefourth largestin the US, whileSan Antoniois the second most populous in the state and seventh largest in the US.Dallas–Fort WorthandGreater Houstonare the fourth and fifth largestmetropolitan statistical areasin the country, respectively. Other major cities includeAustin,the second most populousstate capitalin the US, andEl Paso.Texas is nicknamed theLone Star Stateto signify its former status as an independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence fromMexico.
