Kurt Josef Waldheim(21 December 1918 – 14 June 2007) was an Austriandiplomatand politician who served as thefourth Secretary-Generalof theUnited Nationsfrom 1972 to 1981, and theninth PresidentofAustriafrom 1986 to 1992. His tenure as U.N. Secretary-General was defined by the warming ofCold Warrelations between theUnited Statesand theSoviet Unionduringdétente.His presidency was controversial after it was discovered he had lied about serving in theWehrmachtduringWorld War IIand may have participated inwar crimesinYugoslaviaandGreece.
