Bearsare large, hostile enemies that will attack if you are found infringing on their territory. They live either in the wilderness or in their cave lairs. Bears carry the diseaseBone Break Fever,which deducts 25 points from your stamina if you contract it while fighting one. Fortunately, bears will always roar or growl in an effort to intimidate potential threats before attacking, and thus are fairly easy to avoid if you wish so. Standard bears and the larger cave bears are encountered throughout Skyrim andSolstheim^DB,while the mighty snow bears are largely confined to high altitudes and snowy regions.

Bear carcasses can be harvested for their pelts (for tanning) and their claws (for alchemy).

Hearthfire

TheHearthfireadd-onlets you build bear statues in thetrophy roomaddition of any homestead. Available options include a regular bear standing on its hind legs, and a snow bear growling, both on a large base. The materials needed for each option are:

Notes

• A special Bear is encountered in the cave leading out ofHelgenduringUnbound:its attacks are much weaker than standard Bear attacks, and it also has much less health. It is also much easier tosneakaround than regular bears.
• A Snow Bear always roams the mountains west of theAlchemist's Shack,regardless of character level, making it a dangerous opponent if encountered after leaving Helgen.
• Bear power attacks are quite slow, as they first rear up on their hind legs before slashing at you, giving ample time to evade them. Bears also frequently rear up on their hind legs to roar, which gives you a few seconds to attack without reprisal.

Bugs

• Although Cave Bears are supposed to be of the Cave Bear race (RefID:000131e8), they are instead of the regular Bear race (RefID:000131e7). Because of this, instead of doing 35 or 52.5 damage per attack, they only do 30 or 45 damage per attack.
  • TheUnofficial Skyrim Patch,version 1.3.1, fixes this bug.
• Regular bears were likely intended to be brown-colored and cave bears black-colored.
  • TheUnofficial Skyrim Patch,version 2.0.0, addresses this issue. The mismatch is corrected.
