Beldama Wyrd Tree (Concept Art)

TheWyrd Treeis anature spirit[1]that is physically a gargantuan oak tree[2]that radiates with an unnatural glow.[3]This spirit is located deep in the woods[4]ofGlenumbra's region ofDaeniainHigh Rock. There, it can be found on an island surrounded by a lake within a secluded vale, where it that gives life to the land.[1]The Wyrd Tree is ancient, predating bothMenandMer.Its roots stretch throughout all ofNirn, its power touching everything, even the "bones of the world", and conceal secrets from when time began.[5][4][6]

The Wyrd Tree sustains theBeldama Coven, and is the heart of their mystical crafts.[7]Indeed, these nature-witches ofthe Wyrdserve the tree and draw their strength from its roots, and comfort in its leaves.[5]They inhabit the vale that surrounds the Wyrd Tree, in the north edge of Daenia, at the base of the mountains. In this vale, they live in wooden huts draped in hanging moss, circling around the great-oak and the ring lake where the tree's roots are sprawled across.[2]The tree is thus also known as theBeldama Wyrd Tree.[8]

Early Breton mages were known to usestavesmade from the wood of the Wyrd Tree. They were said to manipulate magicka better than those of theSapiarchs.[6]

History[edit]

According to a myth, duringJephre's Naming (which gave all creatures ofNirntheir shape)[9]in theDawn Era,Jephre entrusted the Earthbones with the task to designate those worthy of becoming Wyrd, who were the wards of nature.[10]In the modern day, the Beldama Coven still reveres Jephre and the Ehlnofey,[3]They serve the purpose of safeguarding the forest, all the while guided by theElemental Guardians(Water, Fire, and the Earth) that are preserved by the Wyrd Tree and wholly protect the region.[11]

During theInterregnumin2E 582,theBloodthorn Culthad invaded Glenumbra, in the hopes of conquering the land. One of their primary targets was the Wyrd Tree and the Beldama Coven, corrupting the tree to cut the connection between the guardians and the Wyrd. This caused the creatures of the forest to run rampant across Daenia, resulting in the burning ofDeleyn's Mill.A group of wyress helped gather the village-folk in the mill and sought ways to quell the chaos. They garnered help from awandering traveler, who managed to calm the beasts and save the villagers. But without their connection, the coven was completely oblivious to the tampering in the tree. WyressIleanabegan the ritual to communicate with them at theVale of the Guardians,to learn of the true happenings and the Bloodthorn's involvement. The traveler was sent to the Wyrd Tree and was able to cleanse the corruption from within.[12]
