Aykhal(Russian:Айха́л;Yakut:Айхал,Ayxal) is anurban locality(anurban-type settlement) inMirninsky Districtof theSakha Republic,Russia,located 469 kilometers (291 mi) fromMirny,theadministrative centerof the district,[2]in thebasinof theVilyuy River.As of the2010 Census,its population was 13,727.[3]

The name derives from theYakutword forfame.[citation needed]

Geography

Sokhsolookhstream is located in the Aykhal's vicinity. The name of the stream in theYakut languagemeansthe river of deathorthe river of traps,in reference to a large number ofreindeerwho, according to local legend, have drowned while trying to cross the river ice.

History

It was founded in 1961 with the beginnings of diamond extraction from thekimberlite pipefound here.[citation needed]It was grantedurban-type settlementstatus in the following year.[2]In 1985, Yubileynaya diamond mine was opened 20 kilometers (12 mi) from Aykhal.

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions,theurban-type settlementof Aykhal,[1]together with onerural locality(theseloofMorkoka), is incorporated withinMirninsky Districtas theSettlementof Aykhal.[2]As amunicipal division,the Settlement of Aykhal is incorporated within Mirninsky Municipal District asAykhal Urban Settlement.[4]

Economy and infrastructure

The local economy is reliant on diamond mining conducted byALROSAat itsAykhalandYubileynaya mines.It is served by theAykhal Airport.
