Brotatois a 2023top-downshoot 'em uproguelitevideo game developed by Frenchindependentdeveloper Thomas Gervraud under the studio name Blobfish. It was initially released inearly accessonSteamin 2022, during which it sold over one million copies.Brotatohas garnered positive reviews from both critics and players and has since been ported to multiple platforms.
Gameplay
[edit]Players control one of several potatoes from atop-down perspective.Many of these characters areunlockedat the start and possess different starting attributes. The objective is to defeat as many waves of enemies as possible using the potato. After each wave, players can upgrade and enhance various attributes and weapons, which can be purchased with materials collected during gameplay.Brotatois classified as ashoot 'em up.Shooting is automatically managed by the computer, although players have the option to change this setting to enable manual aiming.[2]
Development and release
[edit]Brotatois the fourth game developed by Blobfish, a one-manindiestudio based inLyon, Franceduring its development.[3]It enteredearly accessonSteamforWindowson September 27, 2022, followed by the full release on June 23, 2023.[4]
TheAndroidandiOSports, developed and published by Erabit Studios, were released on March 28, 2023. On mobile devices,Brotatois available in bothfree-to-playandpremiumversions.[5]TheNintendo Switchversion was released on August 3, 2023.[4]Versions forPlayStation 4,PlayStation 5,Xbox One,andXbox Series X/Swere released on January 30, 2024, and became available viaXbox Game Passat launch.[6]
In April 2024, the company announced a free upcoming update for local co-op gameplay, as well as their first paidDLCtitled "Abyssal Terrors", scheduled for release in 2024.[7][8]

Rock Paper Shotgun,which reviewed the game during early access, compared it to "a hitFlash gameonNewgroundsin 2006 ". While they appreciated the retro gameplay, they noted that death occurred a bit too easily.[2]TouchArcaderemarked that although it initially appears to be a simple clone ofVampire Survivors,it incorporatesrogueliteelements and is more strategic, thereby establishing a distinct identity.[10]Screen Rantdescribed the game mechanics as addictive, quick, and easily accessible, providing ample freedom for strategy and experimentation. The website included it in their list of the best indie games of 2022.[11]Digital Trendsreferred to it as a "smart evolution of theVampire Survivorsformula "that emphasizes more dynamiccharacter builds.[12]
It was one of the most popular roguelite games on Steam in 2022 and 2023,[13]receiving "overwhelmingly positive" reviews from users.[12]As of September 2022, it had sold over a million copies.[14]It was nominated for "BestSteam DeckGame "at the 2023Steam Awards.[15]
