Christopher Alvin Stapleton[1][2](born April 15, 1978) is an Americancountrysinger-songwriter and guitarist. Born inKentucky,Stapleton moved toNashville, Tennesseein 1996 to earn an engineering degree fromVanderbilt University,but dropped out to pursue a career in music. Shortly after, he signed a contract withSea Gayle Musicto write and publish his music.[3]

For other artists, Stapleton has co-written six number-one singles on theHot Country Songschart,[4]includingKenny Chesney's five-week number-one "Never Wanted Nothing More",Josh Turner's "Your Man",George Strait's "Love's Gonna Make It Alright",andLuke Bryan's "Drink a Beer".[5]He has been credited on albums for artists includingAdele,Kelly Clarkson,Brad Paisley,Dierks Bentley,andTaylor Swift.[6]He has co-written withVince Gill,Peter Frampton,Sheryl Crow,andEd Sheeran,among others.[7]

As a recording artist, Stapleton served as a vocalist in two bands: the bluegrass ensemblethe SteelDriversand the rock bandthe Jompson Brothersbefore emerging as a solo act. His debut solo album,Traveller(2015), peaked atop the USBillboard200and receivedquadruple platinumcertification by theRecording Industry Association of America(RIAA). His 2015 cover of the song "Tennessee Whiskey"receiveddiamondcertification by the RIAA. His second studio album,From a Room: Volume 1(2017) earned his second CMA Award forAlbum of the Yearand aGrammy Award for Best Country Album.His third,From a Room: Volume 2(2017) peaked at number two on theBillboard200, and his fourth,Starting Over(2020), won his third Grammy for Best Country Album. Thetitle trackwas issued as its lead single.

Stapleton has been recognized withseveral awards;these include 10Grammy Awards,11Academy of Country Music(ACM) Awards, and 15Country Music Association(CMA) Awards. He was named the ACM's Artist-Songwriter of the Decade.[8]In 2023,Rolling Stoneranked Stapleton at number 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.[9]

Early life

Stapleton was born inLexington,[10]Kentucky.His mother, Carol J. (née Mace) Stapleton, worked at the local health department and his father, Herbert Joseph Stapleton Jr. (1946–2013),[11][12]was an engineer in the coal mines. He comes from a family of coal miners.[13][14]He has an older brother, Herbert Joseph III and younger sister, Melanie Brooke.[15][16]

Stapleton grew up in the small town ofStaffordsville,Kentucky,which is located just outside ofPaintsville,located between the city and the Paintsville Lake.[13]He graduated fromJohnson Central High Schoolwhere he played football — opposite future NFL draft bustTim Couchon three occasions — and was class valedictorian.[17][18]He then attendedVanderbilt University,where he studied engineering, but dropped out after a year.[19][20]

Career

Career beginnings and bands

In 2001, Stapleton moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a music career. As a songwriter, he signed with the publishing houseSea Gayle Music,a deal he got shortly after moving to Nashville.[21]

In 2007, he became the frontman for the bluegrass groupthe SteelDrivers.They had two hit records; each peaked at number 2 on the bluegrass chart before Stapleton left in 2010.[22]

In 2010, Stapleton founded aSouthern rockband calledthe Jompson Brothers.[23]The band was made up of Stapleton on vocals, Greg McKee on guitar, J.T. Cure on bass, and Bard McNamee on drums. They toured regionally until 2013 and at one point, opened for theZac Brown Band.[24]The band independently released a self-titled album in November 2010.[25]

In 2013, Stapleton signed toMercury Nashville,a division of Universal Music Group Nashville, as a solo artist.[26][27]His first single, "What Are You Listening To?", was released in October 2013, but did not perform as expected.[28]The single was part of a record that was recorded, but never released. Stapleton also cowrote the theme— "All-Nighter Comin'" —to theWSM-AMshowThe WSM All Nighter with Marcia Campbell,an American radio show with a large trucker following. He cowrote the song withVince GillandAl Anderson,with Gill featured on vocals on the track.[29]Songs written by Stapleton have been included on to the soundtracks of several feature films, includingValentine's Day,[30]Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,[31]andHell or High Water.[32]

In 2013, Stapleton and his wife Morgane sang theWaylon Jenningssong "Amanda"live at theGrand Ole Opry.[33]They also did anNPRTiny Desk Concert in November 2015.[34]

At the 2014 CMT Artist of the Year event, Stapleton performed with Lady A, who played Stapleton's song, "Drink a Beer",which Luke Bryan had recorded, in honor of Bryan, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to a death in his family.[35]Stapleton had previously sung it during Bryan's 2013 CMA Awards performance of the same song.[28]

Stapleton's debut solo album,Traveller,was released on May 5, 2015.[36][37]It was recorded in Nashville'sRCA Studio A.Stapleton co-produced the album with producerDave Cobb.[38]On the album he plays guitar and sings with a live band made up of bass player J.T. Cure (from the Jompson Brothers), pedal steel playerRobby Turner,drummer Derek Mixon,Mickey Raphaelon harmonica, and wifeMorgane Stapletonsinging harmonies.[39]Stapleton emphasized the importance of the band lineup that came together during the making and promotion of the record, saying the familiarity he had with Cure and Mixon (he has known and played with Cure for over 20 years), plus Cobb's producing which included contributing acoustic guitar in the recording process, added to the richness of making the record.[40]

Stapleton said he composed the title track, "Traveller",as he and his wife were driving through New Mexico on their way back to Nashville in a 1979 Jeep that she bought for him after his father died in 2013, which they had flown to Phoenix, Arizona to take possession of.[41][29]His wife helped him to sift through 15 years worth of songs to pick nine songs to start recording with.[42]

Stapleton won three awards at the2015 Country Music Association Awards:Album of the Year,Male Vocalist of the Year,and New Artist of the Year.[43]At the CMA Awards, he performed withJustin Timberlakehis version of the song popularized as aDavid Allen Coelive-show staple, "Tennessee Whiskey",and Timberlake's"Drink You Away".[44]Considered a career-defining moment by music publications,[45][46]the performance along with his wins that night lifted him to national prominence.[47]In December 2015, Stapleton received the 2015CMTArtists of the YearBreakoutaward during a live performance at the annual CMT Artists of the Year show.[48][49][50]Travellerwas nominated for theGrammy AwardforAlbum of the Yearand won the categoriesBest Country AlbumandBest Country Solo Performance.[51]It also won theAcademy of Country Music Awardfor Album of the Year.[52]The top selling country album of 2016,[53]it had sold a total of 2 million copies domestically as of July 2017.[54]

In 2016, Stapleton—along with his wife Morgane—contributed the track, "You Are My Sunshine",to producerDave Cobb's compilation record project,Southern Family.[55][56]He collaborated withJake Owenon the song "If He Ain't Gonna Love You"on Owen's albumAmerican Love.[57]Stapleton performed on the main stage at the 2016Country to Country festivalin Europe along withAndrew Combs,Kacey Musgravesand headlinerEric Church.Stapleton was the musical guest on theSaturday Night Liveepisode whichaired January 16, 2016,alongside hostAdam Driver.He performed "Parachute"and"Nobody to Blame"fromTraveller.[58]

In January 2016, Stapleton performed "Either Way",a song he wrote with Kendall Marvel andTim James,at the Country Radio Hall of Fame's Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. It was previously recorded byLee Ann Womackfor her 2008 album,Call Me Crazy.[59]The track would be featured on his second studio albumFrom A Room: Volume 1.Released on May 5, 2017,[60]Volume 1takes its name from Nashville'sRCA Studio A,where it was recorded during the winter of 2016–17.[61]The same month he embarked on hisAll-American Road Show Tour.[62]Volume 1was certifiedgoldin the US the next month, eventually giving Stapleton his second CMA for Album of the Year,[63]and became the best-selling country album of the year.[64]His third studio album,From A Room: Volume 2,was released on December 1, 2017.[65]Both albumsVolume 1andVolume 2debuted at number two on theBillboard200 charts.[66]

Stapleton was the musical guest onSaturday Night Livefor a second time on January 27, 2018, where he performed songs fromFrom a Room: Volume 2withSturgill Simpson.[67]In March, "Broken Halos"offFrom A Room: Volume 1reached the top of theCountry Airplaychart.[68]It earned him the accolades for Song and Single of the Year at the52nd CMAs,while he won Male Vocalist of the Year for a fourth time.[69]

On August 28, 2020, Stapleton released a single titled "Starting Over",a song he previously performed on tour. It is the lead single from hisalbum of the same nameand marks his first single since 2018's "Millionaire".[70]He released a second single, "Cold", on September 25, 2020, to further promote the project.[71]He went on to win Male Vocalist of the Year for the fourth time at the 2021 Country Music Association Awards, and Male Artist of the Year for the third time at the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards.[72]At the latter, he performed "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive"withPatty Loveless.[73]

Stapleton co-wrote three songs forJustin Timberlake's studio albumMan of the Woods(2018), including their collaboration "Say Something",which reached the top ten list on the USBillboardHot 100chart.[74][75]In the same year, Stapleton also recorded a cover of "I Want Love"forRestoration: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin.[76]

On April 28, 2019, Stapleton appeared as an extra in "The Long Night",the third episode of theeighth seasonof theHBOseriesGame of Thrones.[77]

On August 6, 2019,John Mayerinvited Stapleton onstage at his concert to perform a song they had both written the day before, titled "I Just Remembered That I Didn't Care" that has yet to receive a studio release. He stayed onstage afterwards for a performance of Mayer's "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room".[78]

On July 5, 2019, Stapleton together withBruno MarsandEd SheeranreleasedBlow,on which Stapleton contributed in songwriting and vocals.Bruno Marsplayed all instruments on the track except for the bass guitar.[79]The song was written in a basement in Nashville.[80]

Over the course of 2019 and 2020, Stapleton recorded and wrote songs withMike Campbell,formerly the guitarist ofTom Petty and the Heartbreakers,who is now working with his solo project the Dirty Knobs. In addition to Campbell and fellow HeartbreakerBenmont Tenchhaving played on Stapleton's albumStarting Over,Stapleton also featured on the Dirty Knobs' albumWreckless Abandon.[81]

On August 5, 2021, Stapleton was announced to appear as a featured artist onTaylor Swift's second re-recorded album,Red (Taylor's Version)on the track "I Bet You Think About Me".[82]Stapleton contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Nothing Else Matters"to the charity tribute albumThe Metallica Blacklist,released in September 2021.[83]He also appears as a credit vocalist onAdelealbum30,appearing on an alternate version of "Easy on Me".

Stapleton collaborated withRage Against the MachineandAudioslaveguitaristTom Morelloin both the writing and performance of the track "The War Inside" on Morello's 2021 albumThe Atlas Underground Fire.

On February 12, 2023, atSuper Bowl LVII,Stapleton sang theUnited States' national anthematState Farm StadiuminGlendale, Arizona,while the lyrics weresignedinAmerican Sign LanguagebyOscar-winning actorTroy Kotsur.[84]

Stapleton was joined byCindy Blackman SantanaandSnoop Doggin recording the 2023 opening theme song forMonday Night Football,a cover ofPhil Collins' "In the Air Tonight".

Artistry

Stapleton's musical influences range fromoutlaw countryandbluegrasstorock and rollandblues.[85]Editors fromNPRandPastemagazinedescribed his sound as a blend of country,classic rockandSouthern soul.[86][87]Before going solo, Stapleton led the progressive bluegrass band the SteelDrivers and the rock and roll band the Jompson Brothers.[88]His first solo albumTravelleris an old-school country,Southern rockand bluegrass record,[89][90]and his secondFrom A Room: Volume 1focuses on country, blues androots rock.[91]He played the acoustic guitar andelectric guitarfor both albums.[92][93]

Stapleton is asoulsinger[94]with atenorvocal range. After attending one of his concerts in 2015,Los Angeles Times'writer Randy Lewis opined his singing recalls "the note-bending style of country that traces toMerle HaggardandLefty Frizzelland the gut-wrenching expressionism of blues and R&B perfected byRay Charles",while his guitar performances elicits" memories of Texas blues rockerStevie Ray Vaughan".[95]Stapleton has cited Charles,Otis Redding,andFreddie Kingas some of his music influences,[96][97]along withKentucky-based country artists,Keith Whitley,Dwight YoakamandPatty Loveless:"the list goes on and on. Those names are just part of life in Kentucky. You can't help but be aware of them and be influenced by them."[10]

Stapleton is married to singer-songwriterMorgane Stapleton.The couple met when they were working at adjacent publishing houses, married in 2007,[40]and live in Nashville.[7]

Stapleton and his wife have five children: a son born in 2009, a daughter born in 2010, twin sons born in 2018, and a son born in 2019.[98]

Stapleton has received numerous awards and nominations. He is the recipient of tenGrammy Awards,[99][100]tenAcademy of Country Music Awards,[101]fourteenCountry Music Association Awards,[41][102]fiveBillboardMusic Awards,[103][104]twoiHeartRadio Music Awards,[105][106]among others. For his work as composer he has received nineASCAP Countryawards, including the Vanguard Award.[107]In 2019, Stapleton was recognized by the Academy of Country Music as the inaugural ACM artist-songwriter of the decade.[8]TravellerwasBillboard's Top Country Album of the decade.[108]
