Acrew neck(also spelledcrewneckorcrew-neck) is a type ofshirtorsweaterthat has a roundnecklineand nocollarand is often worn with other layers.[1][2]The name dates back to 1939 and was named after a type of sweater worn by rowers.[1]

TheT-shirtcrew neck was developed in 1932 as anundergarmentthat would absorbsweatand prevent theshoulder padsofAmerican footballplayers from causingchafing.TheU.S. Navywas the first of theU.S. armed forcesto adopt the crew-neck T-shirt, or "Gob Shirt".[3]
