István Csom(2 June 1940 – 28 July 2021[1]) was a Hungarianchessplayer who held theFIDE titlesofGrandmasterandInternational Arbiter.FIDEawarded him theInternational Mastertitle in 1967 and the Grandmaster title in 1973. He wasHungarian Championin 1972 and 1973 (jointly). His tournament victories includeOlot1973,Cleveland1975,Olot1975,PulaZonal1975,Berlin1979,Copenhagen1983,Järvenpää1985 andDelhi1987.

Csom was born inSátoraljaújhely,Hungary.He played for the Hungarian team in sevenChess Olympiads(1968–1974, 1978–1982, 1986–1988),[2]including the victorious team of 1978.

Over the course of his career, Csom defeated many top Grandmasters, includingUlf Andersson,Boris Gulko,Tony Miles,Lajos Portisch,Samuel Reshevsky,Nigel Short,former World ChampionMikhail Tal,Rafael Vaganian,andArtur Yusupov.
