John F. Blake(July 10, 1922 – March 27, 1995)[1]was an Americanintelligence official.Blake worked at theOffice of Strategic Servicesand theCentral Intelligence Agency,including serving as ActingDeputy Director of Central Intelligence.
Early life and education
[edit]Blake was born inSan Francisco, California,on July 10, 1922.[1]He graduated from theUniversity of San Francisco,received amaster's degreeininternational relationsfromGeorge Washington University,and graduated from theNational War CollegeofNational Defense University.[2]
Intelligence career
[edit]Blake's intelligence career began duringWorld War IIwhen he served in theUnited States Army.There, he was assigned to theOffice of Strategic Services,a wartimeintelligence agencyof the United States during World War II and a predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency. Blake was stationed inWashington, D.C.,and continued working there after the end of World War II.[2]
In 1947, the Central Intelligence Agency was established and Blake joined. At the CIA, Blake's assignments included atour of dutyinGermanybefore later switching to administration. He served as director of personnel, director of logistics, assistant inspector general, and Deputy Director for Administration. From August 1977 to February 1978, Blake served as actingDeputy Director of Central Intelligence.He retired from the agency in 1979.[2][3]
In 1981, Blake was appointed staff director of theU.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.[2]He was chosen bySenator Barry Goldwater.[3]
In 1982, Blake joined Electronic Warfare Associates Inc. of Vienna. He served as vice president for administration there before retiring in 1986.[2]
Blake then became anadjunct professor,teaching at theNational Defense Intelligence College(now National Intelligence University) until 1993. He received anhonorary doctorateinstrategic studiesfrom the college.[2]
Blake was also a former president and director of theAssociation of Former Intelligence Officersand a former director of theCentral Intelligence Retirees Association.[2]
Honors and awards
[edit]Blake was awarded theDistinguished Intelligence Medalthree times by the CIA and also received theNational Civil Service LeagueCareer Service Award.[2]
He received an honorary doctorate in strategic studies from the National Defense Intelligence College.[2]
Personal life and death
[edit]Blake died ofcanceron March 27, 1995, inArlington County, Virginia.He was married to Frances F. Blake for 46 years and was survived by five daughters.[2]
