John Wesley Broomes(born 1969)[1]is aUnited States district judgeof theUnited States District Court for the District of Kansas.
Biography
[edit]Broomes graduated from theUniversity of Texas at Austinin 1991 with aBachelor of Sciencewith high honors in petroleum engineering. From 1991 to 1996, Broomes served in theUnited States NavySubmarine Force, where his awards included theNavy and Marine Corps Commendation Medaland threeNavy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.Broomes later attended theWashburn University School of Law,where he was an editor of theWashburn Law Journal.He graduated in 2002 ranked first in his class with aJuris Doctor,summa cum laude.
Earlier in his career, he served as alaw clerkto both JudgeMonti Belotand Magistrate Judge Donald W. Bostwick on theUnited States District Court for the District of Kansas.Before becoming a judge, he was a member of the Hinkle Law Firm LLC inWichita, Kansas,where he practiced in the firm's Business Litigation Group with a focus onnatural resourceslaw.[2]
Federal judicial service
[edit]On September 7, 2017, PresidentDonald Trumpnominated Broomes to serve as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Kansas, to the seat vacated by JudgeJ. Thomas Marten,who assumedsenior statuson May 1, 2017.[3]A hearing on his nomination before theSenate Judiciary Committeetook place on November 15, 2017.[4]On December 7, 2017, his nomination was reported out of committee byvoice vote.[5]On April 12, 2018, theUnited States Senateinvoked cloture on his nomination by a 74–24 vote.[6]His nomination was confirmed later that day by avoice vote.[7]He received his judicial commission on April 16, 2018.[8]
On August 21, 2024, Judge Broomes, citingNew York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen,threw out charges against a Kansas man for illegal machine gun possession as unconstitutional under theSecond Amendment.[9]
