Jonah Frankel,also spelled Yonah Frankel, Jonah Fraenkel (1928–2012) was an author,[1]Hebrew literature professor andIsrael Prizelaureate.
Biography
[edit]Jonah Frankel was born inMunichin 1928 and emigrated to Israel in 1937 to escape theNazis.[2]He was a Professor Emeritus of Aggadah and Midrash in the Department of Hebrew Literature at theHebrew Universityof Jerusalem.[3] He has been described as "One of the most important scholars of the modern study of midrash"[4]
He was also a scholar ofpiyyut,and he continued the project of theGoldschmidt-Fraenkel Machzor,started by his father-in-law, ProfessorDaniel Goldschmidt .
Published works
[edit]- Darkhei Ha-Aggadah VeHa-Midrash (The Ways of the Midrash and theAggadah), a two volume set, is an encyclopedic guide to the study of Midrash and Aggadah in broader Jewish culture.[5]

Awards and honors
[edit]- In 1993, Jonah Frankel received theBialik Prizefor significant accomplishments in Hebrew literature.
- In 2000, Jonah Frankel won theIsrael Prizein Talmudic research, for his work on interpreting midrash and aggada.[6]
