Mandy WalkerAM,ACS,ASC,(born 1963)[1]is an Australiancinematographer.She is best known for the filmsMulan,Hidden FiguresandElvis,the latter of which earned her anAcademy Awardnomination forBest Cinematography.[2][3]She was appointed aMember of the Order of Australiain the2021 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Life and career

Born and raised inMelbourne,Victoria,Walker became interested inphotographywhile a student in high school.[1]After graduation she studied film criticism and cinema studies withJohn Flaus,who introduced her to several people working in the industry. Sheapprenticedas an unpaid assistant on severaldocumentariesandmusic videosbefore shooting her firstfeature film,Return Home,at the age of twenty-five.[1]Additional screen credits includeParklands,The Well,Lantana,Australian Rules,Shattered Glass,andAustralia.Hertelevisioncredits include theAustralian Broadcasting CorporationseriesRaw FM.

Walker has filmed commercials forNike,Toyota,Caltex,Cingular Wireless,Foxwoods Casinoand, most notably, the spot forChanel No. 5directed byBaz Luhrmannand featuringNicole Kidman.

The Australian Cinematographers Society honoured Walker with their Award of Distinction forParklandsandLantana.[1]She was nominated for theAustralian Film Institute Award for Best Achievement in CinematographyforThe Well,theFilm Critics Circle of AustraliaAward for Best Cinematography forThe WellandLantana,and theIndependent Spirit Awardfor Best Cinematography forShattered Glass.[1]

Walker was appointed aMember of the Order of Australiafor "significant service to film as a cinematographer, and to professional societies" in the2021 Queen's Birthday Honours.[4]

On 4 December 2022, she became the first woman to win a cinematography award at theAACTA Awards,for her work onElvis.[5]On 5 March 2023, she became the first woman to win theAmerican Society of Cinematographers Awardin the feature film category, also forElvis.[6]

Walker presently lives inSanta Monica, California.
