Kuwait,officially theState of Kuwait,is a country inWest Asia.It is situated in the northern edge of theArabian Peninsulaat the tip of thePersian Gulf,borderingIraqtothe northandIranwith the Persian Gulf andSaudi Arabiatothe south.With a coastline of approximately 500 km (311 mi), Kuwait also shares amaritime borderwithIran.Most of the country's population reside in theurban agglomerationofKuwait City,the capital and largest city. As of 2023,Kuwait has a population of 4.82 million, of which 1.53 million areKuwaiti citizenswhile the remaining 3.29 million areforeign nationalsfrom over 100 countries. In 2024 the population of Kuwait has risen to 4.93 million which is a population increase of 1.98% from 2023.

Before thediscovery of oil reservesin 1938, the country was a regional trade port; from 1946 to 1982, the country underwent large-scale modernization, largely based on income fromoil production.In the 1980s, Kuwait experienced a period of geopolitical instability and an economic crisis following thestock market crash.In 1990, Kuwait wasinvadedand subsequentlyannexedbyIraqunder the leadership ofSaddam Husseinfollowing disputes over oil production. TheIraqi occupation of Kuwaitended on 26 February 1991, following anAmerican-British-French-Saudi-Egyptianledinternational coalitionculminating in the expulsion of Iraqi forces.

Like most otherArab states in the Persian Gulf,Kuwait is anemirate;theemiris the head of state and the rulingAl Sabahfamily dominates the country's political system. Kuwait City(Arabic:مدينة الكويت) is the capital and largest city ofKuwait.Located at the heart of the country on the south shore ofKuwait Bayon theArabian Gulf,it is the political, cultural and economic center of the emirate, containing Kuwait'sSeif Palace,government offices, and the headquarters of most Kuwaiti corporations and banks.

As of 2018,the metropolitan area had roughly three million inhabitants (more than 70% of the country's population). The city itself has no administrative status. All sixgovernoratesof the country comprise parts of theurban agglomeration,which is subdivided into numerousareas.In a narrower sense,Kuwait Citycan also refer only to the town's historic core, which nowadays is part of theCapital Governorateand seamlessly merges with the adjacent urban areas.
