RBI Monetary MuseumorReserve Bank of India Monetary Museumis a museum inFort, Mumbaithat covers the evolution of money inIndia,from the earliestbarter systemand the use ofcowriestopaper money,coins,stock marketsand modern-dayelectronic transactions.[1]

History[edit]

The museum was established under the educational programme by theReserve Bank of India,India's central bank, in 2004 and was inaugurated byA. P. J. Abdul Kalam,the thenPresident of India.[2]It was the first museum in the country devoted toeconomic historyandnumismatics.[3]

The collection, divided into six sections, has about 1,500 objects that include coins dating back to 6th-century BCE and fromIndus Valley,theKushana Empire,theGupta periodand theBritish Raj;ancient paper money from across India,ChinaandSoutheast Asia;financial instruments; and other interactive exhibits.[1][4]Entry to the museum is free.
