Nature of Schlick's murder

[edit]

Does anyone know the name of the person who killed Moritz Schlick?Memenen03:44, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The student's name was Hans Nelböck (or Nelboeck).

This site -http://arbeitsblaetter.stangl-taller.at/WISSENSCHAFTPSYCHOLOGIE/PSYCHOLOGEN/SchlickMord.shtml- contains a lot of information about Nelböck and Schlick. (It's in German.)

Automatic translation (or, why I wish I knew German):

"Hans Nelboeck came from a catholic farmer family. It attained a doctorate with mud. Nelboeck down-shot mud 1936, when this was on the way to a lecture. The motives are disputed. Thus some that mud and Nelboeck had a relationship with the same student, different say that Nelboeck were spirit-disturbed and again different that mud had intrigued against Nelboeck, because it was not fine it enough."

"A pure world view author was Nelboeck certainly not. Its act was nevertheless the symptom of an political-ideological confrontation, which caused the end of the Viennese of circle"

"In the grounds still another motive is called, i.e." the entirely different world view ", a circumstance, which was more precisely defined in the indictment:" the accused one of, which is from religiously adjusted by nature, judged the scientific fight by Professor Schlick represented of the positivism, and/or the destructive tendencies of the atheistischen positivism against preparatory work, for essential "- a selbstladepistole, system Singer, as Ultima ratio transzendentalphilosophischer criticism?"

Can someone put into English some details of the dispute that Nelboeck had with Schlick?Memenen05:27, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The substance of the dispute seems to be tripartite:

1) Nelboeck was angry about Schlick's affair with a female student. Whether this was because Nelboeck fancied the student or merely disapproved of Schlick's behavior isn't made clear.

2) Nelboeck had applied for a job at an academic institution (a "Volkshochschule" is sort of analogous to a community college) and Schlick interceded to prevent Nelboeck's hiring.

3) The court, in convicting Nelboeck, said that Schlick and Nelboeck had fundamentally different world-views - Nelboeck believed in God and Schlick did not. These differences, combined with Nelboeck's tendency toward schizoid disorder (or schizophrenia), contributed to Nelboeck's murderous hatred of Schlick.

Also, part of the article mentions that Nelboeck had been twice diagnosed as schizoid ( "schizoide Psychopathie" is hard to translate) and that Schlick had been the one to recommend Nelboeck be committed on the grounds that he felt threatened by Nelboeck.Jamankowitz17:32, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Homosexuality and Nelboeck

[edit]

I have found no evidence of Nelboeck claiming "that Schlick's philosophy had" interfered with his moral restraint "- by which he probably meant that under the encouragement of Schlick's philosophy he had indulged himself homosexually." Can the author of that please provide a citation for the quote? Additionally, some support should be provided for the interpretation that Nelboeck had indulged himself homosexually. Other accounts suggest the dispute involved a female student, as was the case with the above:http://books.google.com/books?id=QQkvc_PeW7EC&lpg=PA43&dq=Johann%20Nelb%C3%B6ck&pg=PA43#v=onepage&q&f=false— Precedingunsignedcomment added by64.30.2.130(talk)20:52, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit about Schlick's death

[edit]

In this recent edit,William Allen Simpsonremoved all the murder-related categories from this article, but the article text still refers to Schlick's death as a murder. If Schlick's death was not a murder then the article text should be changed to reflect that, or if Schlick's death was a murder then the categories should be restored, unless there is some reason that I am overlooking why the murder categories are inappropriate but the article should still call his death a murder?Biogeographist(talk)15:03, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Agree that the article language varies, probably because editors like to mix words for variety. He is already inCategory:Assassinated German peopleandCategory:Assassinated educators,a separate subtree from murders. The article calls the killer "assassin". I'm only trying to fix miscategorization, please make the article's terminology more consistent.

Per your suggestion, I made the language in the article consistent and restored the murder-related categories. Reliable sources cited in the article call his death a murder.Biogeographist(talk)17:59, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
