Young Shirewas alocal government areain theSouth West Slopesregion ofNew South Wales,Australia. The Shire was located adjacent to theOlympic Highway.
Young Shire was created on 1 July 1980 from the amalgamation of theMunicipality of Youngwith the surroundingBurrangong Shire.[3]
The Shire included the town ofYoungand the small towns ofMaimuru,Milvale,Thuddungra,Bribbaree,Monteagle,Wirrimah,Bendick Murrell,KoorawathaandMurringo.
In 2016, Young Shire was amalgamated intoHilltops Council.The last mayor of Young Shire Council wasCr.Brian Ingram, anindependentpolitician.
Council
[edit]Composition and election method
[edit]At the time of dissolution, Young Shire Council was composed of ninecouncillorselectedproportionallyas one entireward.All councillors were elected for a fixed four-year term of office. The mayor was elected by the councillors at the first meeting of the council. The last election was held on 8 September 2012, and the makeup of the council was as follows:[4]

Amalgamation
[edit]A2015 review of local government boundariesrecommended that Boorowa Council merge with adjoining councils. TheNSW Governmentconsidered two proposals. The first proposed a merger between the Young,HardenandBoorowashires to form a new council with an area of 7,139 square kilometres (2,756 sq mi) and support a population of approximately 19,000.[11]Following the lodging of an alternate proposal by Harden Shire on 28 February 2016 to amalgamate theCootamundra,Gundagaiand Harden shires,[12]theNSW Minister for Local Governmentproposed a merger between the Boorowa and Young shires.[13]
Young Shire was abolished on 12 May 2016 and along with Boorowa Council and Harden Shire, the area was included in a newHilltops Councillocal government area.[14]
