Dean Winters(born July 20, 1964)[1]is an American actor who has appeared on such television series asOz,Rescue Me,30 Rock,andLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit,as well as the character "Mayhem"in a series ofAllstate Insurancecommercials. Winters co-starred withJosh Duhamelin one season of the CBS Network series cop dramaBattle Creek.

Early life

Winters was born inNew York City,New York.He has three siblings: actorScott William Winters,writer Bradford Winters, and Blair Winters.[2][failed verification]He grew up onLong Islandand spent his teenage years inScottsdale, Arizona.He attended theJesuitBrophy College Preparatoryschool inPhoenix,graduating in 1982. Career

Winters has appeared in two of theLaw & Ordertelevision series:Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,where he was a regular in the first season, and as a guest star in theLaw & Order: Criminal Intentepisode "Purgatory".More than ten years after his final appearance on SVU, he again portrayed DetectiveBrian Cassidyin the 13th season finale "Rhodium Nights",became a recurring character in the 14th season and, in the 15th season, also became SergeantOlivia Benson's love interest. He has also made guest appearances onHomicide: Life on the Street,Sex and the City,Third Watch,NYPD Blue,CSI: Miamiand asDennis Duffyin30 Rockas well as previously having an accompanying role inRescue Me.

Personal life

In June 2009, Winters contracted abacterial infectionand collapsed upon arrival at his doctor's office. While being transported acrossCentral Parkin an ambulance, he went intocardiac arrestfor over two minutes.[5]Paramedics were able to revive him, and he was hospitalized in intensive care for three weeks.[5]Over the course of the next year, he developedgangrene,requiring the amputation of two toes and half of one thumb, and ten subsequent operations including a skin graft.[5]Winters was away from acting until 2010, whenTina Feybrought him back to30 Rockand he started work on the Mayhem campaign.[5]
