His father was thebiologistThomas Henry Huxley.He was educated atUniversity College School,London,St. Andrews University,andBalliol College, Oxford.He married firstly Julia Arnold, daughter ofTom Arnoldand a sister of thenovelistMrs. Humphrey Ward,niece of thepoetMatthew Arnold,and granddaughter ofDr. Thomas Arnold,the headmaster ofRugby Schoolwho was immortalised as a character in thenovelTom Brown's Schooldays.

Their four children included thebiologistSir Julian Sorell Huxley(born 1887) and thewriterAldous Leonard Huxley(born 1894). His first wife died of cancer in 1908 and in the same month his daughter Margaret (born 1899) died. (Margaret Arnold did not die in 1908 but on October 11 1981 at the age of 82. Her death was reported in The Times on October 13 1981, a report which clearly identifies her parents and siblings.) Their middle son, Trevelyan (born in 1889) committed suicide in 1914.

After the death of his first wife, Leonard married Rosalind Bruce (said to be related in some way toRobert the Bruce), and had two further sons. The elder of these was David Bruce Huxley (born 1915), whose daughter Angela married George Pember Darwin, son of the physicist SirCharles Galton Darwin(and thus a great-grandson ofCharles Darwinmarried a great-granddaughter ofThomas Huxley) and the younger wasNobel Prize-winningphysiologistAndrew Fielding Huxley(born 1917).

Huxley edited three volumes ofLife and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxleyand also publishedThomas Henry Huxley A Character Sketch.He was assistant master atCharterhouse Schoolbetween1884and1901.He was then the assistant editor ofCornhill Magazinebetween1901and1916,becoming its editor in1916.
