TheMG HSis acompact luxury crossover SUVmanufactured by Chinese automobile manufacturerSAIC Motorunder the BritishMG marque.[2]The vehicle was launched in 2018, replacing theMG GS.[3]In China, it is the brand's largest crossover SUV above theZSandOne.

Overview

The HS is the production model of the concept MG X-Motion. It debuted at the 2018Beijing Auto Show.[4][5]Engine options of the MG HS include an inline four 1.5-litreturbopetrol engineproducing 169 hp (171 PS; 126 kW), and an inline four 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, producing 231 hp (234 PS; 172 kW).[2]

International markets

In Thailand, the HS was launched on 25 September 2019. The HS was offered with the 1.5-litreFFVengine, front-wheel drive, 7-speeddual-clutch transmission(DCT) with three trims: 1.5 C, 1.5 D and 1.5 X Sunroof.

In Indonesia, the HS went on sale starting on 13 August 2020 with the variants are available: Excite and Ignite. The Indonesian HS is imported from Thailand and only offered in 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and 7-speed DCT each of the variant models.[6]On 2 June 2021, the i-SMART Magnify variant was launched.[7]

The HS was introduced in Australia in February 2020. Sourced from China, it is offered in several trim levels. A 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol FWD version is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and is offered in Core, Vibe, Excite and Essence variants. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol AWD with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is offered in Excite X and Essence X variants.[8]

The HS was introduced alongside the ZS and 5 in Mexico on 21 October 2020, marking the return of the MG marque in the Mexican market after 15 years.[9]The HS is offered in Excite and Trophy trim lines.

The MG HS Trophy was launched in Pakistan in October 2020. MG HS was first sold as a CBU unit that was imported from China for almost 2 years. It was offered in only one variant called HS Trophy Edition. Later in 2023, MG Pakistan started selling CKD units which are assembled in Pakistan, this variant was introduced under the name HS Essence. Only one engine option is available which is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder with front-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission.[10]

The MG HS was launched in Philippines on 17 March 2022.[11]

The MG HS was launched in Taiwan on 28 July 2022.[12]

Safety

The HS is equipped with a standard emergency braking system and lane assist, bundled in the MG Pilot kit. Cars are fitted with automatic DCT and are also augmented with a traffic jam, which can track the vehicle up to 56 km/h (35 mph) in front of them. The adaptive cruise control system is also given along with eight airbags, hill descent control (HDC), antilock braking system (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). It was rated with five stars byEuro NCAPtests.[13][14]

eHS / HS Plug-in / HS PHEV

Theplug-in hybridversion of the HS is the first model to feature MG’s all-newhybrid powertrain,which comprises aturbocharged1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, a 16.6 kWh (60 MJ) battery pack and a 90 kW (121 hp; 122 PS)electric motor.It is mated to a 10-speedEDU IItransmission, which consists of 6-speedautomatic transmissionfor the internal combustion engine and a 4-speed automatic transmission for the electric motor.[15]

Its powertrain generates a maximumoutputof 291PS(287hp;214kW) (258 PS (254 hp; 190 kW) in theUnited Kingdom) and 480 N⋅m (49 kg⋅m; 354 lb⋅ft) oftorque(370 N⋅m (38 kg⋅m; 273 lb⋅ft) in the UK), enough for a0-to-100 km/htime of 5.8 seconds (6.9 seconds in the UK) and a maximumall-electric rangeof 32 mi (51 km).

In 27 October 2020, the MG HS PHEV was released inThailand.It generates a maximum output of 284 PS (280 hp; 209 kW) and 480 N⋅m (49 kg⋅m; 354 lb⋅ft) of torque, enough for a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) time of 7.5 seconds and a maximum all-electric range of 67 km (42 mi).[16]

The HS PHEV was released in Australia in the "Essence" trim in March 2021. It makes 258 PS (254 hp; 190 kW) and 370 N⋅m (38 kg⋅m; 273 lb⋅ft), and offers 63 kilometres (63 km) of all-electric range.[17]

MG Pilot/Navigator (facelift)

In September 2020, thefaceliftedHS made its appearance at the 2020Auto ChinainBeijingas theMG Pilot(Chinese:Lĩnh hàng;pinyin:Lǐngháng). The Pilot, which is often also translated as Navigator, is the name given to the mid-life facelift of the HS, featuring the "third-generation design language" according to SAIC. The Pilot and thesecond-generation MG 5are the first models to feature the newer MG family design language.[18]The MG Pilot is 46 mm (1.8 in) longer, and 21 mm (0.8 in) taller than the HS, being 4,610 mm (181.5 in) long and 1,685 mm (66.3 in) tall.[19]

The HS was the UK's best selling car in January 2023, moving 3,481 units,[25]and 4th best selling for 2023 YTD[26]thanks primarily to stock being readily available.
