Lieutenant generalManjinder Singh,AVSM,YSM,VSMis a servinggeneral officerof theIndian Army.He currently serves as theGeneral Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Command.[3][4]He previously held the appointment ofGeneral Officer Commanding-in-Chief Army Training Command.[5]He earlier served as theDeputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Perspective Planning & Financial Development)at HQ IDS,[6]prior to this he wasGeneral Officer Commanding XVI Corps.[7]He also served as Chief of Staff of theWestern Command.[8]The general officer is also the COLONEL of theMADRAS REGIMENTsince 01 Jan 2021.[9]
Early life and education
The general officer is an alumnus ofSainik School, Kapurthala.He then attended theNational Defence Academy,Khadakwasla and theIndian Military Academy,Dehradun.[9]He obtained other military courses from various institutions such asDefence Services Staff College,Higher Command Course andNational Defence College of Thailand.[10]
Military career
He was commissioned into 19th Battalion of theMadras Regimenton 20 December 1986 from theIndian Military Academy.[9]In his distinguished and illustrious military career spanning over 30 years, he has the distinction of tenanting important and challenging command and staff appointments in Jammu & Kashmir and on the Western Front. He commanded his battalion in an intense counter-insurgency environment in Jammu and Kashmir, and tenanted varied staff appointments in Corps and Commands along the Western Front.[11]He was also appointed as a commanding officer forInsurgency in Jammu and Kashmir,infantrybrigadeat theLine of Control(LOC) and an Infantry Division as part of Strike Corps.[10]and a Corps deployed along Line of Control in Counter Insurgency Operations in J&K. The General Officer has tenanted varied staff appointments in Corps and Commands along the Western Front and in the Counter Insurgency Operations environment. The general Officer has also been as an instructor at theIndian Military AcademyandCommandant Indian Military Training Team Bhutan.[12]He has also served as the MGGS (Ops) at Headquarters of theWestern Command[13]
After being promoted to the rank ofLieutenant General,he was appointed as the Chief of Staff of theWestern Command.[14]On 29 October 2021, he took over as the General Officer Commanding ofWhite Knight Corps (XVI)from Lieutenant GeneralM.V. Suchindra Kumar.[7]On 1 December 2023, he took over as theGeneral Officer Commanding-in-Chief Army Training CommandsucceedingLieutenant GeneralSurinder Singh Mahalwho superannuated on 30 November 2023.[15]
He assumed the appointment ofGeneral Officer Commanding-in-Chief South Western Commandon 1 July 2024 succeedingLieutenant GeneralDhiraj Sethwho moved toSouthern Commandas Army Commander.[3]
Awards and decorations
On Republic Day 2024, the general officer was awarded with theAti Vishisht Seva Medal,[16]in 2015 he was awarded theYudh Seva Medaland theVishisht Seva Medalin 2019.
