Name meaning"Khurbet Arah": the ruin of ’Arah (personal name)[1]

'Ara(Hebrew:עָרָה;Arabic:عاره) is a village in theHaifa Districtin northern Israel, located in theWadi Aravalley. Since 1985, 'Ara has been part of theAr'aralocal council.It is located north ofhighway 65,between Ar'ara andKfar Qara.Its population of 4,600 (as of 2004) is almost entirelyMuslim.

History

Burial caves along with whitemosaicpavements have been excavated at the village.[2]

Pottery remains from the Middle Bronze IIb and forward have been found here.[3]

Some of the burial caves have been dated to theMiddle and Late Bronze Agesand theRoman era.[4]Byzantinelamps, glass vases and ceramics have also been found.[2][4]

A building from theUmayyadera have been excavated in the village. It included many pottery objects and a glass jar, all from the same period.[5]

Ottoman era

'Ara, like the rest of Palestine, was incorporated into theOttoman Empirein 1517, and in thecensusof 1596, the village appeared in the tax registers as being in theNahiyaof Shara of theLiwaofLajjun.It had a population of 2Muslimhouseholds and paid a fixed tax rate of 25% on wheat, barley, vines, and goats or beehives; a total of 1,800akçe.[6]

In 1882,PEF'sSurvey of Western Palestinenoted "traces of ruins on a prominent mound with a well."[7]

British Mandate era

In the1922 census of Palestineconducted by theBritish Mandate authorities,'Arahhad a population 372, all Muslims[8]

This had increased at the time of the1931 censusto 673 Muslims, in 115 occupied houses.[9]

In the1945 statistics,'Ara was counted withAr'ara,together they had a population of 2,290 Muslims,[10]of which 800 were in 'Ara.[11]

'Ara was merged with the neighboringAr'arain 1985.
