The1846 United States electionsoccurred in the middle ofDemocraticPresidentJames Polk's term, during theSecond Party System.The election took place during theMexican–American War.Members of the30th United States Congresswere chosen in this election.Wisconsinjoined the union during the 30th Congress. Democrats kept control of the Senate, but lost control of the House.

In theHouse,theWhigswon major gains, turning a dominant Democratic majority into a narrow Whig majority.[3]

In theSenate,Democrats picked up a moderate number of seats, building on their majority.[4]
