The1863 Vermont gubernatorial electionforgovernor of Vermonttook place on September 1.[1]In accordance with theRepublican Party's "Mountain Rule",incumbentFrederick Holbrookwas not a candidate for reelection.[2]The Republican nominee wasJ. Gregory Smith,theSpeakerof theVermont House of Representatives.[2]The Democratic nominee wasTimothy P. Redfield,a former member of theVermont Senateand theFree Soil Party's nominee for governor in 1851.[3]In the general election, the Republican Party's dominance of Vermont politics and government continued, and Smith was easily elected to a one-year term.[4]
