[edit]- William K. L. Dickson,an assistant toThomas Edison,supervises the construction of the firstfilm studio,theBlack Maria,inWest Orange, New Jerseywhich produces many of the earlyKinetoscopeshort films of the 1890s later seen inpenny arcadesthe following year after the studio is completed.
- March –William K. L. Dicksonsuccessfully develops a working prototype of theKinetoscopewhich moves horizontally.
- May 20 – First public display ofThomas Edison's prototype horizontalkinetoscope:Dickson Greetingis shown at Edison's Laboratory for a convention of the National Federation of Women's Clubs inWest Orange, New Jersey.
- August 24 –Thomas Edisonfiles for a patent for themotion picture camera(which he receives in1897).
