Parliamentary elections were held inIranin 1947. The newly elected parliament was opened on 17 July.[4]The election was a three-waypower strugglebetweenAhmad Qavam,Mohammad Reza Shahand pro-Britainconservative politicians.[5]: 240 

Prime MinisterQavam's control over electoral machinery was in many districts challenged by "Imperial Iranian Armyofficers, independent local magnates and pro-Britishprovincial governors ".[5]: 240–241 

A public protest by shopkeepers, bazaaris and university students and headed byMohammad Mosaddeghamong other politicians was held to call for a free elections, however, despiteQavam's promise to hold a free election, it was "rigged"and hisDemocrat Party of Iranwon the majority, including all 12 seats inTehran.[5]: 240–241
