The1958 East Pakistan-India Border Clashwas a armed skirmish betweenEast PakistanandIndiain August 1958. The clashes took place between troops of theEast Pakistan Rifles(EPR) and theIndian Armyin the small village of Lakshmipur, located inSylhet District.[4]

The clash began on 7 August 1958, afterMajor Tufail Mohammadordered three quick response teams to launch an attack on the Indian troops who infiltrated and occupied Lakhsmipur in 1957.[5]

The clash[edit]

On 7 August 1958,Major Tufail Mohammadordered to close in on the Indian soldiers from all three sides. Soldiers started to crawl their way towards the Indian troops in an attempt to make them withdraw. Though they were able to reach close to the Indian troops, as the fight started, the soldiers had serious wounds andcasualties,as they were vulnerable to the Indian firing.[5]

Major Tufail Mohammadwas wounded after he threw a grenade on the Indian post killing Indian soldiers, later on, Wounded Tufail engaged in aclose quarters battlewith Indian troops, eventually eliminating them by throwing grenades and engaging a firefight with Indian troops and Machine gunners and destroying Indian outposts and making Indian troops retreat.[5]He later succumbed to his wounds, and before he died, he said his last words to his Junior officer: "I have completed my duty, the enemy is on the run."[5][6]
