The1990 State of the Union Addresswas given by the 41stpresident of the United States,George H. W. Bush,on January 31, 1990, at 9:00 p.m.EST,in the chamber of theUnited States House of Representativesto the101st United States Congress.It was Bush's firstState of the Union Addressand hissecond speechto ajoint session of the United States Congress.Presiding over this joint session was theHouse speaker,Tom Foley,accompanied byDan Quayle,thevice president,in his capacity as thepresident of the Senate.

The speech lasted 35 minutes and 43 seconds.[1]and contained 3777 words.[2]

TheDemocratic Partyresponsewas delivered by House SpeakerTom Foley(WA).[3]

Edward J. Derwinski,theSecretary of Veterans Affairs,served as thedesignated survivor.[4]
