Building on advancements from the 1990s,computerswere utilized to create effects that would have previously been more expensive and time-consuming, from the subtle erasing of surrounding islands inCast Awayto the vast battle scenes inThe Matrixsequelsand300.

- The 2000s saw the resurgence of several genres.Fantasy filmfranchisesdominated the box office withThe Lord of the Rings,Harry Potter,Pirates of the Caribbean,theStar Warsprequel trilogy(beginning in 1999),The Chronicles of Narnia,etc.Comic booksuperhero filmsbecame a blockbuster subgenre following the releases ofX-Men,Unbreakable,andSpider-Man;culminating in the unprecedented achievements ofThe Dark Knightboth in terms of revenue and acclaim.Gladiatorsparked the revival ofhistorical epicsset inancient times,and theBollywood-inspiredMoulin Rouge!did the same forlive actionmusical filmsin theWestern world.Hong Kongfight choreographerslikeYuen Woo-pingcontinued their influence inHollywoodwith suchmartial arts filmsasKill Bill: Volume 1andKill Bill: Volume 2,even leading to the spread ofwire futechniques into other subgenres alongside filmmakerJohn Woo'sgun fufrom the likes ofMission: Impossible 2.Thebattle royale genrealso began with the release of theJapanese filmBattle Royale.
- Certain film categories that were generally not popular in North America became more attractive to western moviegoers.Subtitlednon-English language filmssuch asCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,Hero,The Passion of the Christ,Pan's Labyrinth,andApocalypto;as well asfeature-lengthdocumentarieslikeFahrenheit 9/11,March of the Penguins,Earth,andMichael Jackson's This Is It;ended up being very successful.
- Computer animationreplacedtraditional animationas the dominant technique for animated pictures in American cinema, especially after the release ofShrek,which is the first film to win theAcademy Award for Best Animated Feature.Further extending to the exploration ofmotion capturetechnology in such films asRobert Zemeckis'The Polar Express,Beowulf,andA Christmas Carol.However, hand-drawnanimefilms also gained more exposure outside of Japan with the releases ofHayao Miyazaki'sSpirited Away,Howl's Moving Castle,andPonyo;whilestop-motionfilms earned significant audience interest thanks toChicken Run,Corpse Bride,Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,andCoraline.DreamWorks Animationwas thetop animation studio of the decade,withPixarand20th Century Fox Animationfollowing close behind (the latter afterFox Animation Studioswas shut down on October 31, 2000).
- Major film studiosstarted to focus their budgets on established titles with built-infandomsto lower the risk of commercial failures and maximize financial profit. Increasing the productions ofsequels,prequels,remakes,reboots,adaptations,spin-offs,crossovers,and so on; often as attempts to create or revive franchises. Capitalizing especially onnostalgiainduced by the likes ofCharlie's Angels,Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,Freddy vs. Jason,Starsky & Hutch,Alien vs. Predator,The Dukes of Hazzard,Superman Returns,Miami Vice,Rocky Balboa,TMNT,Live Free or Die Hard,Transformers,Rambo,Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,and many others. Out of the 50 highest-grossing films of the decade worldwide, only nine (of which six are animated) are not based on another property, though one of these became the top-grosser of all time: late 2009'sAvatar.
