TFFSüper Kupa 2011should have been the 39th edition of theTurkish Super Cupsince its establishment asPresidential Cupin 1966. The match was going to be contested between the2010–11 Süper LigchampionsFenerbahçeand the2010–11 Turkish CupwinnersBeşiktaş.The match was to be played on 31 July 2011[1]but the TFF postponed[2]but was cancelled after thematch fixing scandalinvestigations. The venue for the final would have been theErzurum Universiade Arena,which would have hosted its firstTurkish Super Cupfinal.

On 27 December 2021, Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court acquitted[3]Fenerbahçe executivesAziz Yıldırım,Şekip Mosturoğlu, İlhan Ekşioğlu and others, which made the issue of replaying the match moot on Fenerbahçe side and they posted an announcement about their application to theTurkish Football Federationon 30 December.[4]On Beşiktaş side, Emre Karadağ, Beşiktaş deputy chairman, declared that they would be willing to compete.[5]The Turkish Football Federation presidentNihat Özdemirsaid that the issue would be under review in the board meeting, also that he supports the idea of replaying the match.[6]

Background

This was to be the 7th overallnational super cupmatchup between the teams since 1966, and the 3rd matchup since 2006, when the cup was rebranded asTFF Süper Kupa.Fenerbahçe won in2007and2009against Beşiktaş, while Beşiktaş has yet to win their 2ndTFF Süper Kupasince their victory in theinaugural tournament.Also, both teams created a pattern, playing against each other in every other odd year.[7]

Path to the final

Fenerbahçe were champions by 26 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses, collecting 82 points overall. They were trailed byTrabzonspor,which collected the same number of points but came second due to head-to-head record. This also meant setting a new national record for Fenerbahçe, as they grabbed their record 18th title.[8]

On the other hand, Beşiktaş finished fifth in theSüper Lig,but were more successful in thedomestic cup.They won the playoff round againstMersin İdmanyurdu,and won the group stage by three wins and one loss. They eliminated quarter finalistsGaziantep B.B.and semi finalistsGaziantepspor.Beşiktaş won their ninth cup by a decisive penalty shootout against first time finalistsİstanbul B.B.[9]

Request for the match to be played

On 18 December 2023, Fenerbahçe presidentAli Koçvisited the newly elected Beşiktaş presidentHasan AratatTüpraş Stadium.They announced that they would apply for the 2011 Super Cup to be played.[10]
