The2015–16 George Washington Colonials men's basketball teamrepresentedGeorge Washington Universityduring the2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.TheColonials,led by fifth year head coachMike Lonergan,played their home games at theCharles E. Smith Centerand were members of theAtlantic 10 Conference.They finished the season 28–10, 11–7 inA-10 playto finish in fifth place. They defeatedSaint Louisin the second round of theA-10 tournamentto advance to the quarterfinals where they lost toSaint Joseph's.They received an invitation to theNational Invitation Tournament.As a #4 seed, they defeatedHofstra,Monmouth,andFloridato advance to the semifinals atMadison Square Garden.At MSG, they defeatedSan Diego StateandValparaisoto become the 2016 NIT champions.

On September 17, 2016, following an investigation into allegations of verbal abuse of his players, head coach Mike Lonergan was fired.[1]He finished at George Washington with a five-year record of 97–70.

Previous season[edit]

TheColonialsfinished the2014–15 season22–13, 10–8 inA-10 playto finish in a three way tie for sixth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of theA-10 tournamentwhere they lost toRhode Island.They were invited to theNational Invitation Tournamentwhere they defeatedPittsburghin the first round before losing in the second round toTemple.
