Albert David Baumhart Jr.(June 15, 1908 – January 23, 2001) was aRepublicanmember of theU.S. House of RepresentativesfromOhio.He served inCongressfrom 1941 to 1942, and again from 1955 to 1961.
Early life
[edit]Baumhart was born inVermilion, Ohio.[1]Baumhart's mother died at 35 in 1918 from theSpanish Flu epidemic.[2]He attendedOhio UniversityinAthens, Ohio,receiving his A.B. and M.A. in 1931.[1]
Political career
[edit]He was a publishing house representative at Vermilion, Ohio, from 1932 to 1939.[1]He was a member of theOhio State Senatefrom 1937 to 1940.[1]
Baumhart was elected as a Republican to theSeventy-seventhCongress.[1]Throughout all of 1940 and most of 1941 he was known as an "interventionist Republican" who advocated that America go to war in Europe against Nazi Germany in order to helpthe United Kingdom.He resigned to accept a commission in theUnited States Navyon September 2, 1942.[1]He was discharged as a lieutenant commander on January 17, 1946. He was a member of the public relations staff ofOwens-CorningFiberglassCorp., inToledo, Ohio,from 1946 to 1953.[1]He served as director of theRepublican National Committeein 1953 and 1954.[1]
Baumhart was again elected as a Republican to theEighty-fourth,Eighty-fifth,andEighty-sixthCongresses.[1]He was not a candidate for renomination in1960.Baumhart voted in favor of theCivil Rights Acts of 1957and1960.[3][4]He was a delegate to1968 Republican National Convention.[1]
Post-Political career
[edit]He later worked as public relations consultant.[1]
Death
[edit]He died on January 23, 2001, inLorain, Ohio.[1]He is interred at Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion, Ohio.[1]
