TheA422is an "A" road for east–west journeys in south centralEngland, connecting the county towns ofBedfordandWorcesterby way ofMilton Keynes,Buckingham,BanburyandStratford-upon-Avon.For most of its length, it is a narrow single carriageway.

Route (east to west)[edit]

The eastern end of the road is atBromhamon the outskirts of Bedford, where it branches off theA428.Its route then crosses into theCity of Milton Keynes. It briefly merges with theA509to bypassNewport Pagnell.Passing over theM1,it crosses through the northern part of theMilton Keynes urban areaas a dual carriageway, known locally additionally as the H3 Monks Waygrid road.

Upon meeting theA5in Milton Keynes, the A422 multiplexes northbound with it for 3 miles (4.8 km) as far asOld StratfordinNorthamptonshirewhere it regains its identity (and single carriageway status). Resuming its east–west orientation, it bypassesDeanshanger, goes through the centre ofBuckingham, aroundBrackley,on intoOxfordshirejust before crossing theM40at Junction 11 and then intoBanbury. From the A422/B4525roundabout, on the western edge ofMiddleton Cheney(east of Junction 11), the road is dualled until it meets theA423and resumes as a single carriageway. From there toStratford-upon-Avon,it is a minor road crossing intoWarwickshireat theBattle of Edgehillsite, where it descends steeply down the Sunrising Hillescarpmentand then across theFosse Way.

From the western side of Stratford-upon-Avon, the road multiplexes with theA46until its junction with theA435trunk road at Oversley on the outskirts of the historic market town ofAlcester. At that roundabout junction, the A422 heads briefly north to cross theRiver Arrowbefore heading west into the village of Arrow. In the village the road takes a right hand turn at the old Toll House, heading for the border with Worcestershire and passing through the village ofInkberrow, said to be the village that was the inspiration forAmbridge,[1](the setting for the long-running BBC radio seriesThe Archers).

The last section toWorcesteris narrow and winding until it terminates at theA44just south ofM5junction 6.

The road is 83 miles (134 km) long.[2]
