Route
[edit]Until the early 1970s, the road ran from a junction with theA57 roadatBold Heath,four miles west ofWarrington.The road currently begins at junction 7 (Rainhill Stoops) of theM62 motorwayinMerseyside,and runs in a northerly direction as adual carriagewaythrough the centre of St Helens, meeting theA58 road,then theA580 roadto the north of the town. The road continues in a north-westerly direction, bypassingRainfordto dual carriageway standard. It crosses the border intoLancashire,before reaching junction 3 of theM58 motorway.Continuing north-westerly still, as a single carriageway road it travels throughOrmskirk,meeting theA59 roadat acrossroads.North-west of Ormskirk, it crosses over theLeeds and Liverpool Canal,and meets theA5147 roadnearScarisbrick.Shortly afterwards, it crosses the border back into Merseyside, and reaches the town of Southport. It terminates at its junction with theA565 roadin the centre of the town.
