A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsis an upcoming Americanfantasydramatelevision series created byGeorge R. R. Martin.AprequeltoGame of Thrones(2011–2019), it is set to be the third television series in theA Song of Ice and Firefranchise. It uses Martin'sTales of Dunk and Eggnovellas as its basis. It starsPeter Claffeyas Ser Duncan the Tall, the titular hedge knight, andDexter Sol Ansellas Egg.

The series comprises six episodes to be released onHBOandMaxin 2025.

  • Peter Claffeyas Dunk/Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight of humble origin.
  • Dexter Sol Ansellas Aegon "Egg" Targaryen, a prince of the Targaryen dynasty and Ser Duncan's squire.
  • Finn Bennettas Aerion "Brightflame" Targaryen, Egg's older brother.
  • Bertie Carvelas Baelor "Breakspear" Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne, Hand of the King to Daeron II and Aerion and Egg's uncle.
  • Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer.
  • Daniel Ingsas Ser Lyonel Baratheon, a knight known as the "Laughing Storm" and the heir to Storm's End.
  • Sam Spruellas Maekar Targaryen, the Prince of Summerhall, Baelor's younger brother and Aerion and Egg's father.

Development[edit]

HBOannounced that it was developing a new televisionprequelseries toGame of Thronesin January 2021. The series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and a youngAegon V Targaryen,nicknamed Egg, and is based on the novellas byGeorge R. R. Martinthat constitute theTales of Dunk and Egg,taking place 90 years beforeA Song of Ice and Fire.[1]There were reports thatSteven Conradwas hired to write for the series in November 2021.[2]The series received an official order fromHBOin April 2023.[3]By then, Martin had already written the script for a pilot episode.[4]Casting began in October 2023 with plans to begin filming in 2024.[5]By February 2024,Warner Bros. DiscoveryCEODavid Zaslavconfirmed that the series had begun pre-production and that Martin was serving as creator and executive producer.[6]

In May,Owen Harriswas hired to direct the first three episodes of the series and serve as an executive producer, setting the tone for the series.[7]That June,Sarah Adina Smithwas announced to direct three of the six episodes of the first season.[8][9]

Casting[edit]

In April 2024, the lead roles were cast withPeter Claffeyas Ser Duncan the Tall andDexter Sol Ansellas Egg.[10]In June, it was announced thatFinn Bennett,Bertie Carvel,Tanzyn Crawford,Daniel Ings,andSam Spruellhad joined the cast as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Prince Baelor Targaryen, Tanselle, Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Prince Maekar Targaryen, respectively.[8][9]

Filming[edit]

Production began in June 2024 inBelfast,Northern Ireland.[8]

Release[edit]

The series is set to be released onHBOandMaxin early 2025 and will consist of six episodes.[11][7]
