The Honourable Mr JusticeAarif Tyebjee Barma(Chinese:Bào yến minh;born 1959) is a Hong Kong judge, and currently serves as Justice of Appeal of theCourt of Appeal of Hong Kong.

Biography

Early life

Born inMumbai,India,Barma grew up inHong Kong,where he attendedDiocesan Boys' School.He then readlawatExeter College, Oxfordobtaining aBAin 1981 and aBCLin 1982.

Barma wascalled to the BaratMiddle Templein 1983, and to the Hong Kong Bar later the same year. After doing most of his pupillage in London, he returned to Hong Kong to complete his pupillage and commenced practice there as abarristerat the end of 1984. In 2002, he was appointedSenior Counsel.He was a member ofTemple Chambersduring his time in private practice.[1]

Barma sat as aDeputy High Court Judgein 2002 and 2003.[2][3][4]

In September 2003, Barma was appointed a Judge of theCourt of First Instanceof theHigh Court of Hong Kong.He dealt mostly with company, insolvency, commercial and tax cases.[5]In 2012, Barma became the Judge in charge of the Admiralty List.

In November 2012, Barma was appointed a Justice of Appeal of theCourt of Appealof theHigh Court of Hong Kong.[6]

In September 2015, Barma was elected aBencherof theMiddle Temple.[5]
