Abai Region(Kazakh:Абай облысы,romanized:Abai oblysy,pronounced[ɑˈbɑjwobləˈsə]) is aregion of Kazakhstan.PresidentKassym-Jomart Tokayevannounced on 16 March 2022 that the region would be created. The area split off fromEast Kazakhstan Regionwhen Tokayev's bill came into force on 8 June 2022. The administrative center of the region isSemey,until 2007 known asSemipalatinsk.Its borders roughly correspond to the oldSemipalatinsk Regionwhich was liquidated in 1997 and merged with East Kazakhstan Region.

Geography

The city of Semey is the administrative center of the region of Abai. The Region of Abai bordersEast Kazakhstan RegionandXinjiangto the east,Pavlodar RegionandAltai Kraito the north,Karaganda Regionto the west andJetisu Regionto the south.

4. Beskaragay District,the village ofBeskaragai;
5. Borodulikha District,the village ofBorodulikha;
6. Zharma District,the village ofKalbatau;
7. Kokpekti District,the village ofKokpekti;
8. Urzhar District,the village ofUrzhar;
9. Makanshi District,the village ofMakanshi;
10. Zhanasemey District,the city ofSemey.

Etymology

The region was named after the KazakhaqynAbai Qunanbaiuly,who was born in what is now the Abai Region.
