Abdur Razzak(23 January 1942 – 21 August 2017),[1][2]known asRazzak,was a Bangladeshi actor and film director.[3]He was dubbedNayak Raj Razzak(King of Heroes), a term introduced byAhmed Zaman Chowdhury,editor of the magazineChitrali.[4]Razzak won theBangladesh National Film Award for Best Actorfive times for his roles in the filmsKi Je Kori(1976),Ashikkhito(1978),Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo(1982),Chandranath(1984) andJogajog(1988). He was awarded theIndependence Day Awardin 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh.[4][5]He acted in more than 300 Bangladeshi and Indian Bengali and Urdu films and also directed 16 films. He is considered one of the greatest actors inBangladeshi film industry.[6]

Early life

Razzak was born inNaktala,South Kolkata.[1]His parents Akbar Hossain and Nisarunnesa died at early ages.[1][7]He joined the troupeRongo Shobha Natya Dalled byChhabi Biswas.[1]In 1961, he went toMumbaito get a diploma at the Filmalaya Film Institute.[1]1964 Calcutta riotsmade work difficult. That year he moved to Dacca to try to break into the nascent East Pakistani film industry.[5]

In Dhaka, Razzak found work atAbdul Jabbar Khan's Iqbal Films, and assisted in Kamal Khan'sUjala.He then worked in small roles in the filmsAkheri StationandTero Nombor Feku Ostagor Lane.[1]

Career

In 1966, Zahir Raihan was looking for someone to play the lead role of his new filmBehula.He chose Razzak who was then serving as one of his assistants.[1]Razzak went on to act in films includingAbirbhab,Moynamoti,Taka Ana Pai,DorpochurnoandJibon Theke Neya(1970). After the1971 Liberation Warhe continued working on the filmsManusher Mon,Ora Egaro JonandOsru Diye Lekha.[1]

Razzak got his major breakthrough by acting in the action filmRongbaj(1974), directed by Zahirul Haq.[8]

Razzak acted in leading roles with many prominent actors and actresses, includingAnwar Hossain,Bulbul Ahmed,Sohel Rana,Ilias Kanchan,Shuchanda,Shabana,Bobita,Kabori,Sujata,Shabnamand others. He appeared in a number of films opposite actress Shabana.

Razzak went on to make more than 300 appearances inBengaliandUrdumovies.

Razzak made his directorial debut in 1977 with the filmOnonto Prem.[1]He created his own production companyRajlokkhi Productions.He went on to become the first Bangladeshi actor to be aUNFPAGoodwill Ambassador. He later founded the Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association.[1]

Personal life

Razzak was married to Khairunnesa (nicknamed Laxmi). Together they had three sons,Bapparaj,Bappi, and Samrat, and two daughters, Nasrin Pasha and Afrin Alam.[7][9]He died on 21 August 2017 inDhaka.[10][11]
