Adolf Holtzmann(2 May 1810 inKarlsruhe– 3 July 1870 inHeidelberg) was a German professor andphilologist.His name is associated with aProto-Germanicsound lawknown asHoltzmann's Law.

He studiedtheologyat the universities ofHalleandBerlin,where he was a student ofFriedrich Schleiermacher.He later studied philology at theUniversity of Munich,where his influences includedJohann Andreas Schmeller.Holtzmann also attended classes inParisgiven byEugène Burnouf,and beginning in 1837, spent a number of years working as a tutor to members ofBadenroyalty.[1]From 1852 he was a professor ofGerman literatureandSanskritat theUniversity of Heidelberg,and a notablephilologistof his day.[2]

Holtzmann was the father-in-law ofAlbrecht Kossel,Germanbiochemistand 1910Nobel laureate,by his marriage to Holtzmann's daughter, Luise, in 1886.[2]
